Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
do most of you guys quarantine new fish?
I don't. As long as the fish has no obvious sickness, and is swimming around, they go straight into the display.

I keep my fish fat so they have a strong immune system ;)

I think QT can stress out the fish more and cause them to get sick.
If they come shipped, I think that even acclimating them by drip can stress them, but it is also true that it is a risk that one runs by not quarantining the new fish and can bring a disease that can kill all the fish.

I don't drip acclimate either... :astonished-face:

Yes Luis this is true.
I have never quarantined anything but I have never bought a fish online.
Only in the store.
The last one I bought I left at the store for 3 weeks, checked on it, made sure it was eating, etc.

I do that for everything, temperature and drip aclimatation for corals, fish and invertebrates.

Fish and inverts I drip acclimate. Corals I plop and drop.

So mine are pretty much always shipped opening the bag can cause an ammonia spike so I choose not to drip. I use to raise discus fish which are pretty delicate and the only time I lost fish from a shipment was when I drip acclimated them.

I do it with everything because I buy from many different stores and I don't know the parameters they run and because it is normally a 20 to 30 minute trip to my house, if I knew that where I bought they have the parameters almost the same as mine, I would do temperature acclimatization and that's it.

I acclimate fish and inverts thats it. Corals I don't acclimate. Usually I do quick acclimation for fish, just to get the salinity up.

I have a really nice SW PetCo, so I've gotten 2 of my fish from there, and my most recent trip, the salinity in the bag was 1.015 :grimacing-face:. I had to do a long acclimation for the fish because an increase of .01 salinity is way out of my comfort zone to just plop a fish in.

That is always my fear that most LFS run very low salinity and when the salinity changes the parameters also change.

Yup. That's why it's always important to check the salinity of the bag!!!

That was from my freshman year in undergrad, we didn’t have cell phones back then not to mention cameras in our phones!
Didn't even have telephones.. or cameras in general :grinning-face-with-sweat: :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Oh dang did I not ever properly introduce myself?
I swore That I did. Sorry about that very rude of me.
Everyone calls me Jim and in the Army I was often called Wild West …lol

I guess you could say what I do is a quick acclimation. I float to get the temp up then I pour a little water in to equal roughly 1/3 of the bag then wait a few minutes and repeat two more times then into the tank they go.
