True, but I couldn't tell you how many people have devoted hours to helping me with my journey who don't have an excellence award. So the same metric could probably be applied to all awards or contests on r2r. There are definitely more folks deserving of that honor. I like to think my success is more of an excellence award than a badge would be to them, though. With that being said, that 12 gallon ato reservoir is NICE!

That's the 'problem' that guy Rice guy or whatever his name was totally turned me off the contest. I thought it was a nice way to reward some of the many, many great people on R2R that are always here willing to help. I can think of dozens of R2R members, including pretty much the entire smorgasbord, that are just as deserving as the winners but R2R can only do so much. I thought it was better than nothing but that Rice guy win stumps me. I've never heard of him, I've never seen a post from him and while his tanks are pretty for all I know he had a vendor come in, set them up and take the photos. How can someone that interacts with R2R so little be recognized as MotM? TotM, maybe PotM sure but MotM, no way.

I do agree though that as nice as it would be to win a bunch of stuff and get a little 'official' recognition it is not why I'm here. The feeling I get when I help someone, or when someone helps me, is what it is all about.

As far as the Mariner of the month thing goes I love Tim's thread, good questions but not many responses.
Mike had some great points as well and so did Luis, who I agree with wholeheartedly that pretty pictures is NOT what it's all about.
Very hard topic.
My feelings are that it's about what you do, what your true connection to R2R is exactly, who you impact or have impacted, helped now and along the way.
If it's based on pictures I'm out cuz everyone has seen an Aiptasia farm and would never vote for one.
And Mike, @Nor'easter Reefer you've given me so much along the way through this thread you are just as deserving as anyone else.

I didn't want to talk about this anymore lol but here it is, it really hurt me when the man with the 2 tanks won, rice something, the man has 138 comments in R2R in all his time, how is it possible that someone like that wins Mariner of the Month? Who could he have helped or how many people to be considered Mariner of the Month? Nobody takes away that he has some beautiful tanks, but he won just because of that. People who had never voted and new accounts started voting because his tanks

My point exactly. Someone has to nominate you for an Excellence Award. It says that you tried very hard to help at least one person and that person let R2R know that you helped, or at least tried to. It is a fairly rare award because most people don't nominate others because they either are too humble to believe they can nominate someone or couldn't be bothered, or, most likely, don't even know the award exists. The good news though is that every person I know that has been awarded is worthy of the recognition.
