I think basically its just feeding them a high quality food before you feed them to your fish.
You either feed them to your tank right away before they have completely absorbed their egg sacks or you feed them something like spirulina powder and start to soak it with Selcon or similar. You can just soak them in Selcon but that isn't really gut-loading, it is more like slime-coating. If you then place them in some phyto you have a cheap reef stew. The live food is generally cleaner and the chasing helps to stimulate the feeding response in the fish.

Even moving prepared foods is better than it just plopping in the tank. I feed so that whatever is fed pellets/frozen/live goes through the feed cup and gets dispersed into the water column before they can grab it. They have to chase their food but of course they are pretty smart. When they see we are about to feed, they line up like a American-style football team at kick-off, waiting at around mid-tank to grab the food as it whizzes past. Then, once it has zoomed around the tank a few times and starts to settle they all poke around in the sand for what they missed, except of course a Firefish which would never stoop to eating off the floor.

Yup and at 5lbs you can use it for other things without running out quickly like cleaning fruits and such around the kitchen.
Is washing an orange or lemon in citric acid basically bathing it in its own blood? Lol

Good morning!!!! I guess now I have to research how to gut load... heard that term before but never looked into it.
Just a gross way to say "feed" lol

Basically giving them something that you want the fish to ingest also. I use spirulina powder for these and healthy fish food pellets for the white worms.

Does it matter which compartment I have a protein skimmer in my sump?
I like it to be in the compartment right after the filter socks.

Amanda,

I should probably add that the whole gut-loading thing is because a common practice used to be to hatch brine and let them grow for a few days and then feed them to the tank before they died. We were basically feeding iceberg lettuce to the tank, zero nutritional value because the nauplii have used their egg sac to grow and they were not fed. Feeding the nauplii with Spirulina Powder retains their nutritional value. Adding something like Selcon is like turbo-boosting the Brine making them Wonder Brine.

Is this the right citric acid to clean my wavemakers with? I ordered some from Amazon but it got lost so they gave me a refund.
