I have Peppermints in my display tank right now but need to add more. There are two or three varieties that eat Aiptasia the most common is Lysmata wuderermanni, but Lysmata boggessi, and Lysmata kuekenthali are also proven Aiptasia eaters. The issue is there are a lot of very similar looking species of Lysmata. The most common issue though is that it seems pretty common for Camelback Shrimp (Rhynchocinetas durbanensis) to be sold as Peppermints.

This thread has a chart that shows a lot of the common Lysmata species.

hey guys ive been in the hobby for almost a year now. one thing I haven't been successful at keeping is anemones I love the look of bta and rock flowers but they only last about a month before they curl up and never to be seen again. I also had good success keeping euphyllia until I added peppermint shrimp to the mix to get rid of a very small aptasia issue. is there any chance the reason I cant keep these is because of the shrimp. if so what are some ways to remove them from the system.

A word of caution, ALL shrimp are opportunistic feeders. If you are going to add Peppermints I would first move all LPS to a separate tank during treatment, especially Hammers.

Thanks...I am super excited about this one..and all the new planning I have been doing.
Learned from all my mistakes over the years.
Lowered the stand to 37 inches and the tank is 23 inches tall. Super easy to get in and great eye height when sitting at the recliners to watch tank.
Going to cut up the old 300 and make maybe 4 or 5 feet length x 30 inches wide sump out of it. Still planning all of the sump design.
It will have no glued in sections. Gonna build acrylic drop in chamber sections for easy moving and cleaning...
Will wind up being 3 chambers,
Cutting off the bad part(seam separation)

From what I understand John is the only way to know for sure if it’s a true aptasia eating peppermint shrimp is to lick it and if it tastes like a candy cane it’s the real deal.

True peppermint . I kept getting the wrong ones that people were selling me as peppermint but they weren’t .

It's from the pumps. It's carbon . It's on the inside and in pump compartment mostly . Some on top plates

See what Tom has as far as berghia ? If he’s willing to sell . Forget the shrimp as I remember really nice shrimp food in your tank ( corals) . Just take and rip them out by hand till you can afford them . It’s like hit or miss weather they will not eat your corals . I didn’t have the corals you have .

Really!? I got one in the past and all it ate where corals! Then I put him in my wifes tank and he ate one of her tube nems tentacles off. Then I put him in the bayou!

So there's "fake" Peppermint Shrimp that don't touch Aiptasia and then there's several varieties of "true" Peppermint Shrimp - some breeds are more likely to actually eat Aiptasia and leave your corals alone. All of them have the potential to eat fleshy corals - that is after all why they eat Aiptasia, some are just less likely than others.

Being honest, I've had better luck with Petco Peppermints than anywhere else - including Reef Cleaners "guaranteed" Peppermints.

I'm fairly certain boggessi is what I ended up with from Petco.

Thanks Tim , couldn’t have put it in a better way . He just has to find the right one if he does it . I had numerous bad ones til I realized that I was being sold shrimp that would’nt eat them . I’d hate to have him get the wrong one and have corals get damaged .

Those were likely Camels.

I had a crash of the breeding station about a month ago. I haven't done a count but I only have around 25 sub-adults (1/4" size, not yet breeding size) that I know of for sure at the moment. I think there are a few adults in another tank but I haven't gone hunting for them to be sure. There are maybe a dozen egg spirals but it is a month or two away from anything worth selling. I was raising them for my display tank but decided to go with the Peppermints because I was having trouble getting a breeding group going in the display. Too much predation in a mature tank with wrasses.

I was getting ready to tear down the breeding station because I thought I had lost all the Berghia but when we turned on the light to clean it out, there were twenty-five sub-adults cruising the tank and there are probably a few more hiding. I have no idea about how to safely ship them even if they were big enough.

Do you have small ones that is currently eating Aiptasia ?

Those were likely Camels.

As soon as I was informed I got two of the Aiptasia eating kind and I had no more problems . In my case they never did eat any coral . Guess I was lucky . But no Aiptasia for many years now .

I have got to start going to your Petcos.

I have two true peppermint shrimp in my tank that made it over from the transfer in early February. I didn’t even know I had any left in the Biocube. I mostly only see them after lights out. They don’t bother anything in my tank.
