Hey all, im still here and following. Things have become stagnant for me (I guess you can consider this a good thing) I've had the tank going for almost a week. Don't have any livestock & have been using the power of prayer to ensure I do not come home to a watery disaster. Do have to reset the siphon.

I know most of here are WAY passed this point but for the newer folks who are tagging along like myself who are at a similar stage or even earlier and have a HOB overflow. here are some tips that I found helped get the siphon going.


I put plastic food wrap around one of the ends of the U tube. Then I filled the tube as much as I could with water and placed the plastic on the other end of the u tube. I made sure there was water within the box in the DT and dumped a cup of water into the overflow where to U tube is seated. then I flipped the U tube into the chamber, once I removed the plastic a siphon started to occur. There will be an air bubble, to get rid of the air bubble what I did was lowered the box in the DT to allow an increased influx of water to enter DT chamber thus increased the pressure in the U tube and pushing out the air bubble. there might be a tiny air bubble left, just shake the u tube and it will work its way down into one of the chambers and out of the u tube.

I tried to sucking out method which ended up going terribly and filled my mouth multiple times with saltwater. I threw up LOL.
My overflows often lose prime so I've used 2 of my dosing pumps to keep the air sucked out. It does get annoying but something you're going to want to check at least weekly. Have a spot on your tank water level that is consistent. Once the water starts creeping up above that point you're going to need to reprime the overflow. If lowering the box works, do that when you need to remove the air.

When we were manufacturing HOB siphons we added a one way check valve to the top of the siphon and attached it to the air intake on old style power heads. The slight suction kept the tube bubble free and we never lost suction. Old school but it worked great. Make sure your air intake is below water level even when the main pump in the sump is off. Easy fix.

Failures are common just as is success.
Making it through them makes us who we are.
I have the same overflow
I fill the inside box, fill the little outside compartment stick airline tubing 3/4 way up front side and suck.
I leave the airline in the tube. It's been there 4 years and I've never touched the box in that time
Before this it would go Rouge on me until I got the flow just right, about half way in the front box. You can run faster just not slower. Slower and the siphon is not happy.
Once the siphon is going you shouldn't have to touch it. To purge any bubbles I'll just forcefully fill the box on say a water change and it'll purge it out
Like I said I just left the airline tubing in it and it seems to be happy with that.
I don't explain very well hope that makes sense.
I can take a picture when I get home.

Yes … had to make the new batch of 3-day fish food; oh, and some cereal found its way into a bowl for me. Course my worried mom woke up in time to walk all these frik-innnn liquids back to my room. Got her to go back to bed. She’s 83; I’m supposed to take care of her! Usually do, but not this weekend

Same basic idea and would work for sure! Just enough to keep the air from accumulating.

do you mean inside of the physical box inside the DT or the water level in general in the DT.

do you have a picture of a marking to represent, im 100% a visual learner lol
