Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Hey all, I just got home from my lax game. Another good win!
I am going to do a water change and test the water tonight.
Before I do a water change I want to ask you what u think is going in with my hammer.
Over the vast few weeks it hasn’t been open like it usually is.
Today is the worst I have seen it. I know it has a few heads that have been splitting but not sure if that’s the problem. It also has a little baby new head coming in.
What do y’all think?
Thanks

Can you get a pic under whites?
Wanna see everything else too!

Maybe the hammer is hungry, I haven’t fed it in a while.

Thanks for the pics Parker!
Not the coral expert so I'll let Kev or Tim take over.
Just wanted to see the extent of the GHA.

Mine definitely look unhappy before and during a split, so probably.

Four parameters that keep my torches, hammers and frogspawn happy, magnesium 1400, calcium 430-450, nitrates 10-15 and phosphates .05-.1

@Reef Devils Fair amount of splitting going on. That can mean it’s happy or not happy. Too much feeding can force extra splitting. You shouldn’t be feeding any of your corals during GHA outbreak.

If they are irritated, likely GHA and water parameters that are fluctuating a lot. It looks like you still need to toothbrush all those rocks and then do water change. Other than that, you should not be doing or adding anything extra. Just feed your fish, hold off on coral food and anything else.

It would help us to know everything you ADD to the tank.

@ESABOE I meant to say 20 gallon water change?
You should toothbrush the rocks - all of it; scoop up floating GHA with net; then do a 30% water change, doesn’t matter the gallons, it’s the %. Then, run the reefmat roller advance 6 inches to catch anything else. Keep it at 1inch advancement for next 14 days cause you will now start the 2nd Flux treatment. Put in fresh chemo-clean blue. Use the filter floss strip over the black sponge in baffle; change out every 3 days.

Don’t dose any aminos or anything else. Just feed fish; remove GHA.

Side note: if your tank/corals are less then 8 months old, no need to be feeding corals anyway. They are getting enough by the food and poop from your fish. I know it’s really tempting, but for new tanks can be difficult to manage parameters as you have seen. Mi only ADD two things, All-for Reef for my alk/cal/mag and brightwell’s Coral Amino. And I don’t do the amino more than twice a week; during outbreak not at all. My corals growth has been consistent for a 5 month old tank. Could I go hard core to get incredible growth, sure. But the downside is not worth it.
