Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Can you guess who has eaten more fish food than all my fish combined over the last 4 years?

Is anyone running a canister filter instead of a sump? Tested my nitrates for the first time in a while (Tsk tsk) and its reading 75ppm on the hanna nitrate HR, reattempted with the same results. I have heard of canisters being nitrate factories. Starting to get a more "ugly stage" since introducing @00W generous christmas gift (60W reef light, thank you again!!!) i figured thats why i avoided the ugly stage for so long was due to basic room lighting.

If you are running a canister and are having success with low nitrates how often are you cleaning the canister?

I wish i had tested my nitrates before switching to the canister. The only reason i switched was because my overflow plumbing lost is adhesion to the glue and started overflowing onto my floor. Luckily, i was cleaning the tank when this happened and no damage to the home was done. i rushed to the fish store hoping that they had schedule 80's in stock but they didnt and i left with an impulse / emergency buy of a fluval fx2 at way overpriced value from my LFS lol.

(FOWLR CURRENTLY)

When i get home I'll try and remember to snap a pic of my current container. I don't think you can even tell the brand anymore lol

I had heard they are nitrate factories but have never tried it myself

This one was just a demonstration... they're usually found out back, mangled, and somehow the lid is across the yard... he will steal anything he cam reach. He's literally indestructible.

Big downhills on the tank the last few days. I had 2 btas ( one healthy and one recovering) on acclimation box for few weeks and decided to put them on glass pot where there is not too much flow and good light. The healthy one jump during the night and went through 3 powerheads. The other one stayed days no moving and same thing during the night. I have no nem guard as it has to be made specifically by 3d printer (German brand and I am in a small country). On the 2nd one, skimmer stop working for no reason. I couldn't clean the pump as it is fully siliconed. After many tests, it was the water level which was the same as before. So I modify the partition to have more water. After it was the gyre not working, solved the problem, after it was another powerheads solved also. And finally a stray voltage. All in the same morning. Result Gomez is missing, fish got ich again, add more food and selcon resulting on the increase of GHA and cyano and 2 torches bailout. What bother me the most is Gomez the rest will be solved slowly. Lesson learnt.
Sorry Remi!
Your outlook is amazing I wish everyone in the world had your positivity!
Tank looks really good by the way!
I hope your buddy shows up ASAP!
GO Gomez!!

They can be nitrate factories for sure but having a bunch of nitrate in the beginning I've never thought of as a bad thing.
When I started this hobby 35 years ago all we had, really were canister filters and under gravel filters.
I used to clean mine once a month.
Over the years I've had one on my big tank off and on for short periods but mainly just for surface agitation.
I've also used them for gravel cleaning, or, in my case, bottom glass cleaning where I could clean but not change water.
My trigger makes a mess and sometimes I'll just vacuum but not very often.
You can easily run a tank on a canister filter many people still do
And the uglies, well, they're going to happen.

I think after school today I'm gonna do ANOTHER rock scrub... Just the regulars two on the left, far top one one on the right and maybe one of the harder ones to balance. Going to my LFS for test and possible sea hare tomorrow! Still awaiting Live Aquarius response on gift card etc.
This is how I feel after the 5th rock scrub. :/
