Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Maybe you all could help me out. I made a post yesterday about one of my hammers. I never got any responses about it so that kinda annoying. But anyways I have a hammer that I have had for a long time that has a great flesh band and a bunch of baby heads coming in. It has looked great for so long until now. 2 days ago one of the heads just started falling off. Not sure why. Just want to know if I should maybe drag it into two pieces? Would that help?
I don't have a good answer for you but I would not split it. It does not look diseased to me but it does look very stressed. Splitting it will only stress it more. You didn't say how long you have had it but I would check your parameters. Have you changed lighting or flow recently?

I’m had it for about a year. Been on that frag rack the whole time. I haven’t checked parameters yet but I will tomorrow. Light and flow is the same.

I was thing about fragging this way. What do you think?

Your tank looks amazing Parker!
Sorry you know I'm not much help here, only just support.

You could split it on either arm of the Y but I wouldn't. A hammer can lose a head and recover quite nicely. If the head it lost was completely gone over night, you also might want to check for predation. Do you have shrimp in the tank or maybe a Butterfly fish? How does the rest of the tank look? Do you dose anything?

Ok I won’t frag it. I have a shrimp. No butterfly fish.

Rest of tank looks good. I dose cal, alk, and mag

Here is a photo of the rest of the tank

Beautiful tank. Everything else looks great. I doubt it's a parameter problem.

I would look toward predation or other mechanical issues, or possibly coral warfare. A shrimp may tear apart a coral for food or even consume a coral. I have had Peppermints and a Fire that tore apart hammers but I've also had lots of shrimp that never bothered a coral.

If it continues to weaken it may be best to split it but I don't like to frag corals that are already stressed.

Edit---
The exception is a coral that is STNing or a very large coral where the majority of the colony is not yet noticeably unaffected.
