I used to cook dirt in the oven all the time to sterilize it before planting inside the house. since I got a new stove I don't do that now. but you can do it on the grill. aluminum foil turkey roasting pan, dirt, wet it, aluminum foil cover and cook at 200 for 45 minutes. kills all eggs. nothing hatches inside the house later. even though some companies kiln dry their soil, when they ship it and box stores store it (outside) it kind of defeats the purpose.

Sounds like something maybe been wrong with this culture from the start. Did it smell foul when it arrived? If there were a lot of dead worms in there, the rest of the colony may be on its way down. They should be devouring that.

i think i got a good culture. ive found out a couple of things i did wrong, so hopefully i can salvage some and keep trying!

Great idea for soil!
For coir, id buy the dried block, then add boiling water to cover it and put that in a 5 gallon bucket. The water will of course pasteurize the coir, and will give you perfect field capacity for your substrate to host the worms. You'll be happy to know I use this method for growing beautiful mushrooms (your favorite, I believe)! If you allow ANYTHING to out compete the mycelium , you'll lose the culture. It has to be sterile.

The new baby banana torch arrived this morning, had me worried. I saw almost no flesh, and it looked rough when it came in. But a couple hours later and, it's much better.
