You could add a canister filter (dont shoot hear me out).

But you'd have to repurpose it. I wouldn't add any mechanical filtration like filter floss. Fill it with live rock rubble or biological filtration medie like brightwells or maxspect. If you add floss you're going to have to go into the canister often as it'll become a nitrate factory if not changed.
But that frees up the top racks in the canister filter for things like carbon or phosgaurd/rowaphos.
Keep the hob as mechanical filtration. Just an idea for a more simple approach. I may filter my hopefully soon to be frag tank.

There is nothing wrong with HOB or external (cannister) filtration. The main thing the sump gives you is lots of places to put stuff you probably don't need.

It uses an undergravel filter, no sump, no AIO, not even HOB.

I ran tanks for many years on just an undergravel. I didn't get my first, and only, sump until I had been reefing for 30 years. My tanks were just fine with HOB. Now I run AIOs and put too much junk on my tank.

There are some benefits to not having a sump, less chance of catastrophic water loss, less complication, and fewer places to put junk you don't need or even worse doesn't work. We all do it. The less places you have to put junk the less junk you will have.

need some smorg advice, looking to move forward on my wife's clown/anemone tank. I hate low gallon set ups. if these can be drilled. i would rather spend for these than an AIO. Buy 2 one for sump, one for tank. I have the stand covered.

You need to figure that based on the size of your tank. As an example let's say you have a 40 gallon tank. Then you need to decide how much turnover you want. I usually aim for somewhere between 5-10 turnovers per hour. Let's say 10. So you want an overflow that can handle 400 gallons/hour (gph). That is 40 gallons times 10 times per hour equals 400 GPH. Then you would want to buy a return that is close to 400 GPH. Now you need a return pump that can put out at least 400 GPH AT THE HEIGHT of your return.

Pumps are usually rated in the specs at zero head and if you check around, you can find a chart. Let's say your pump is three feet below the return pipe. It can get complex depending on how you plumb it but try to have a relatively straight pipe from the pump to the actual return (there are commercial ones available.

Pick a pump that has somewhere between 25-50 percent more GPH than you need at three feet (from the chart). That will probably be a pump you see listed as a pump with a 600-700 GPH rating.

So probably won't be getting one haha. I feed my corals broadcast once or twice a week. If these needed daily/bi-daily target feedings? They'll die haha

They're extremely good at catching food. They grab it readily. They get blasted with food because they're under my feeding hole. I make sure every head gets something every few days though if it seems to be getting left out. You dont want to over feed them either or the food will rot and kill them quicker than starvation would. 2 or 3 times a week is fine for fathead. It's about like feeding acans IMO

yes, they are really a deep green color. look a lot like Duncans.
Surprised you don't have a chalice already. I found a really cool one but the item isn't a WYSIWYG and they are showing a 1/2" representative on sale for $200. but I'm thinking a blue chalice.

that's awesome but no, it was a 15 plug tower. I'm still trying to figure out what I want. if things don;t work out, I'm just going to buy another octopus and use all this as its food source!. the octopus really was the best ever. but I worried too much if I wanted to go away. More so long term even if it's only 18 months.

They'd be fine. You'd do great with them. No concern about par or lightning. And you know whether it's getting enough food because you're feeding it.

yes sir. made with pork. It came out great but I was not a fan of the spaetzle. I tried changing it up and by far my other recipe is better. First time I made it with mustard as part of the marinade.

That is a colony of Fathead dendros. They're a non photosynthetic coral. They have orange polyps and pink skeletons.

They have to be spot fed. You usually dont see a colony that big, usually its a couple of heads. VintageReefer found this one for me.

It's a certified alien and is actually bright in the dark, lol

How often do you feed? Have you seen growth? It seems pretty cool!
