This sounds suspect me.

The two level measurements are low side and high side pressure in the system. The low side should be around 3x's lower than the high side.

That's part of the figuring.

He seemed like a great guy and I'm sure the unit is low on R22 but if it still blows cold air after eighteen years the leak has to be pretty small, of course it could be getting bigger but no way to know without some comparative values. Needing a refrigerant recharge, to me, does not equate directly to doing a rip-clean. I also wasn't crazy about the somewhat 'soft' answers to where the leaks were and how much charge we still have in the system. I don't know much about HVAC but I know enough to be skeptical. At the same time having the AC go belly-up in the middle of summer in AZ isn't the best scenario either.

I have thought about buying up gallons of R22 and stockpiling it for resale a few years down the road.

I'm starting to wonder how/when/where I can paint it now. I can't do Spar Varnish in the garage. May-July is pollen season. As in you can't even open windows for a few hours. I have the mast steps sitting in front of me to do next. And due to the week of rain coming, I think I am going to make new fenders. the ones I made are rock hard; definitely not Charmin. I didn't think the poly protective coat would have made them that hard but it's what they say to do to last longer.

If he checked for leaks the he should have used a dye to locate the leaks and you should be able to see them under an ultraviolet light. There are also products you can use to run dye through the system. Either way, you'd be able to mark the leak and, hopefully, keep an eye on it.

I’ve recommended replacing with a Ranco temp controller W/titanium probe mod, or just getting an AquaLogic modded Ranco…

Yes! An analysis would be great.
I highly recommend Ranco controllers. I can honestly say I've never heard of one failing. They are commercial grade and built way better than any "reef" temp controller. That is what I use on my tank. You can also just seal the temp probe with heat shrink. I put an 18" piece of heat shrink on mine. I put silicone in the end, ran the temp probe down almost to the silicone, sealed that end and seated the probe in the bottom. Heated up the shrink tube starting from the bottom to the top. It's cheaper that the titanium. I used the silicon as a 'just in case' if the end wasn't completely sealed. I sealed it by heating a pair of small needle pliers and pinching it shut.

We’ve been every year for the past 4 years. My wife and I agreed that we would be thrilled if we only owed a couple thousand this year. We got a 1k refund. We were beyond thrilled!

We owed over $8000 this year... . My wife's financial planner moved one of her investments and rather than doing it as a rollover, he withdrew it to invest in her other portfolio. All he said was he made a mistake... you think? He's not longer 'working' for us by the way...

I heard you can find the leak if you hold a lighter, move it around and see if the flame moves....
