Cam, I don't run a skimmer and I've done maybe 3 5 gallon water changes on my 70 in the past 6-8 months. I also don't use RODI for my top off water or water change water but my municipal water here is able to do that.
How do I use my cities water?

Good morning Smorgasbord family!!!! Its Friday Eve and my wonderful hubby's birthday! He always says i give him too much for gifts and I always feel like I don't give him enough. Tonight I will be cooking him his favorite meal of fried cubed 🦌 and cream style corn.
Sounds like he's in for a treat. I might know where some venison is.......

Well as of this morning somehow there are bubbles! And a lot of them. It's a very dry skim though. Very clear small bubbles not a frothy type thing.

As of a standard. I guess at this point I'm just trying to keep my levels down and have no gha. All the gha that grew back is dying, it grew back while dying. It's odd. I
All it takes is a quick scrub and it goes away.
I don't always skim, but when I do I prefer a drier skim - I feel like it gets more junk out without lowering the salinity.

In all seriousness though, it's all preference. When I used to run skimmers on my tanks, the drier the skin was, the nastier the cup was.

Wow ! Tim , no Rodi water for top off ? Is how clean is your water ?
High alk, high mag, high cal, high TDS, high pH, low nitrates, approximately 80° at the tap most of the year... My city doesn't use chloramines.

How do I use my cities water?
That would be completely dependent upon the quality of your municipal source. Mine doesn't add fluoride or chloramines so it's "relatively safe". It's hard water with a high TDS so it was depleting my RODI fairly quickly. Using RODI was causing Diatoms frequently so I stopped. Keep in mind, 20+ years ago when I had my first reef tank I didn't have an RO. Most of the OG reefers on here had access to saltwater from the ocean but a lot of us used our kitchen sink water.

If your city uses chloramines or doses anything that could be dangerous for your reef tank I'd stick to RODI.
