Gonna set up a 20 gallon long reef/frag tank. Could I do a few bangi cardinals as the only inhabitants? What other species only set ups would be cool in a 20?

Bangaiis would pick each other off; you'd likely end up with either a single, or a bonded pair.

PJ Cardinals would do well, but they'd eventually outgrow a 20 as they can get fairly big. Takes a long time though.

Make it a harlequin shrimp tank with one center large cave for the shrimp, coral around and on top of the center cave. Put clowns or biota gobies if you need the fish poo. Feed it a chocolate star every 10 days or so

I’ll pass on the harlequin, awesome looking shrimp, but I’d rather not feed live if possible. Plus my children would probably be terrified watching it eat a starfish.

That is probably the one issue with harlequins, they are super expensive to feed. Cool inverts though if that is a type of tank op wants.
Damselfish can be cool, either azures or springeri should tolerate each other just fine. Firefish can work as well but they arent the most active

I can understand this. Sexy shrimp are pretty adorable for kids.

for fish, a swissguard would look great in a 20L.

I tried adding some sexy shrimp with a clownfish before, never seen them tear apart "food" faster. Lol worst $35 i have ever spent. Swissguard basslets are cool, not sure if they would eat the sexy shrimp as I have never kept them, but they look like they have moderately large mouths. Candy basslet is also an insane but equally as insane of a price, but a fish I have always wanted to get

I love barnacle blennys but scape will be a lot of negative space/set up for lots of frags so looking for something that will swim in the open a bit. . .

Chalk basslets maybe?
