Hi all!

Just thought I'd drop in and put up the info on our upcoming frag swap. :)

2009 Tennessee Reef Aquarium Expo and Frag Swap

Date: January 17th, 2009 from 12:00 – 5:00

Setup for Vendors: January 16th from 7:00pm – 9:00pm and January 17th from 9:00am – 12:00pm

Location: Kingwood Heights Church of Christ (115 E. MTCS Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37129)

This location is at least 3x the size of our previous venue, is absolutely perfect for a reef event (plenty of outlets and breakers, a great sound system, access to projectors, plenty of parking, easy loading/unloading access) and will be great for allowing our event to continue to grow. It also came at an incredibly great price which allows us to allow free admission and still reasonably expect to cover our costs for the event.

Admission: Free for all attendees. For hobbyists and industry vendors who need space to sell, tables are available for $20 each. Each participating reef club will be furnished one free table for their members. Please contact me by e-mail (see below) to reserve table space. If members of your club are interested in the free table, also please let me know, as I will only be allocating space for clubs that express interest.

Guest Speaker: Sanjay Joshi is giving a talk about reef aquarium lighting. As an engineering professor at Penn State University, a dedicated hobbyist in his own right, and a head of the committee in charge of Penn State's reef aquarium, Sanjay has successfully applied his professional expertise to the study of reef aquarium lighting and has become a foremost expert in the area. Additionally, his focus on disseminating his knowledge to hobbyists has made him an indispensable member of the reef community (e.g., Sanjay's Lighting Guide). We are thrilled to have him in attendance.

Other:

---Door prize tickets will be available with registration at the event.

---Raffle tickets will be $1 per ticket or $20 for 25 tickets (door prizes and raffle items will be announced closer to the swap.)

---There will be an educational fragging demo at the swap. All attendees will be welcome to attend the presentation. Tickets to reserve a frag of the corals will be $5 per coral and will be available up until 15 minutes before the fragging demo begins (which is currently scheduled for 3:30). Frags will be available for pick up just prior to the main raffle at the end of the swap.

---A beginner reef aquarium slide show will be played throughout the swap in the dining area that attendees may view at their leisure.

---Food is being handled by a youth group at the church. As I get details about what exactly will be available I will update everyone, but expect concession stand style food at a fairly reasonable price

Please let me know if you have any questions. If you would like to reserve a table, you may do so by emailing our VP at [email protected].

Thanks!

If you haven't been to the MTRC swap make sure you go!! These guys put on one heck of a swap. Well worth the drive up to Nashville. Sounds like ya'll are gonna have another awesome swap. Looking forward to it!!

Thanks salt newbie! We are hoping this year will be even better than the last... of course. :)

Brandon

Ya, definatly was worth the trip, I didnt sell much but had a great time and got some nice SPS frags, I will plan on going back for sure, We can start planing a carpool after christmas.

I'm going to carpool! I'll help pay for gas. Might even provide the car if needed though I might let someone drive depending on how I feel.....

I'm assuming that gflat is going to be there? I guess I can look in your forum to see what all is going to be there.
Susan

I'll probably be interested in going. How do you think this event compares to the one that was at Ooltewah Methodist Church recently?? Just curious.

I was unfortunately not able to attend that one, but I believe this one may be a little bit bigger. Not 100% sure, though.

Brandon

Yea noticed very few people from nashville came down to support us this last time.

Julie the MTRC swap has been slightly bigger than ours. Around the same amount of vendors but I think they have had a little more traffic than we did coming through. This year we did not have a good turn out. Not near as good as last year - as far as attendance goes. Our vendors rocked this year but the people just didn't come out. It will be a good swap regardless of how many people come. There will be some great corals and the MTRC group is a great bunch of reefers that are fun to be around. If at all possible you should try to go. Watch their forum over on RC for presell threads - that's the best way to lock in some great deals.

I wanted to, but was not able to because of finances. It seemed like others had similar reasons for not being able to make it. It was nothing personal, bkv. ;)

If I'm not mistaken, the Chatt. swap just happened to be right when all the gas prices went sky-high, too, which didn't help anything needless to say.

Brandon

Yes, Gas prices were pushing $4 a gallon, there is no doubt it took probly 1/3 of our people away. We still had fun, but we had alot of BIG vendors come that were also expecting largeer numbers. we couldnt have predicted the gas prices at that time.

Definitely.

Maybe this coming year will be great for all the local swaps with gas prices coming down.

Brandon

Yeah, this years' Chattanooga swap was smaller than usual, so not the best to use as a guideline. It seems like you guys usually pull a good 200-250. With the economy like it is and reef tanks being a luxury item, people aren't as willing to loosen the purse strings. It was still a good turnout and we had a great time, despite the peepshow:D.

Peepshow... scary. ;)

Last year we had a little over 400. So maybe, hopefully this year we may pull the same number with the economy.

We'll see! I'm hopeful! I'm also hoping to make the ETRC and Chatt. swaps this coming year.

Brandon

I know there was a good turn out to the nashville swap, but I cant fathom 400, I felt there was a steady flow of traffic, but 400 sounds high. Oh well the more the merrier.
It was a good peepshow Gary! maybe nashville will follow your footsteps and throw on a peepshow!

I hope gFlat doesn't have ANOTHER peep show!!! It really took some time to clear that up!!! Your stuff was just wild! I can't wait to come to this one. I'll be looking forward to seeing everybody again (the vendors- though gFlat had to be my fav- my neon green neptia is very lovely!!) and everything is so much less expensive at swaps! The bargains are great (so I don't feel as bad if anything dies). Shut up Brandon.
