Hi I am about to begin a 240 Gallon 48x48x24 build that will be in between my bathroom and livingroom with part of it right at the shower. The sump tank R/O Waterchange will be downstairs directly below the tank. That leads me to my first of many questions for you guys.

I dont want a overwhelming amount of live rock in the display tank so was thinking of putting a 50 gallon sump in then running into another 100 gallon tank with all the live rock and some microalgea then pumping back into the display tank. I'd prob still put 250 pounds in the display tank then another 200 or so in the 100 gallon. The 100 gallon will have lights on it and I was gonna handle all my water changes from down stairs out of the sump and 100 gallon so the total system will around 400 gallons.

Is all that necessary?

150G Rubbermaid tub in basement with live rock is all that is necessary. Consider that a cryptic refugium. In your 4’ by 4’ display, consider a reverse flow ug filter with 2” aroggonite substrate.

Hummm! I'm looking into that. With the cryptic refugium I'll still run my sump and everything but tap off of it into refugium? Also how does this reverse flow ug work with a sump?

RFUG filter is false bottom in display tank. Pump display tank water in the plenum under the UG plate with 2” of aroggonite substrate.

That's a great idea Subsea, we did that back in the 80's and it worked very well. Not really much of a need to vacuum gravel either since it goes to the top and down the overflow. Without the use of check valves in the return line, it does become problematic to keep the tank from emptying into the sump below. My reverse flow setup was pretty much a closed loop so no danger of flooding. I just don't care for or trust check valves, however there are some commercial ones that are likely reliable year after year in a corrosive environment.
