Looking for a little input.
I've been in the hobby for about 2 years now. Started with a 29 gallon reef tank. Being the beginner and cheap skate I went with the bare minimum and value priced equipment. I am running a Fluval 206 canister filter with carbon, a Fluval reef LED, and a CoralLife BioCube skimmer. A few months ago my girlfriends 5 year old daughter dumped a whole bottle of ph buffer in the tank thinking it was food. Naturally I went into panic mode and immediately siphoned out all of the buffer I could see and preformed a 5 gallon water change. I waited 2 days and did a larger 10 gallon water change. The next day my tank was dead. Corals, anemone, and fish. My only survivors were a purple fire fish, and a maroon gold strip clown fish I got for a steal at Petco, I know that is pretty much a sin in the hobby but the guy worked labeled him as an Osc. Clown for $15.
It has been a few months and the tank has done nothing but go down hill. I have been battling GHA, Bubble, and red slime algae for the last 3 months. No matter what I do it seems to come back with vengeance.
I also have a 12 gallon nano cube which has been up for about 8 months now and looks amazing. The thought has been running through my head to set up a small 10 gallon live sand/rock tank and let it cycle and transfer the lone survivor clown to it and either start the 29 gallon over or bite the bullet and get my 55 gallon/20 gallon sump setup.
I absolutely love the hobby and in no way do I want to leave but the constant battle with algae is frustrating to say the least. I test my water regularly and everything seems to fine with water parameters. I'm on location right now and don't have any numbers with me.
Just wanted to get an idea or see if anyone has ever had the same problem and any thoughts on my probably flawed plan of action. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks fellas
