Hey guys, Im looking into a 40 gallon breeder for my next display. Should I go with a cheaper undrilled, with an overflow box, or look for a predrilled. Also what is a good sump for this tank?

I did the 40 gallon breeder from petsmart. Drilled it myself and installed the Eshopps Eclipse S. For a sump a 20 gallon long works great. Otherwise the aqueon proflex 2 or the trigger crystal 30 is a great fit as well

Thats what I was thinking of doing. What did you use to drill it? Do you have any pics of the sump etc?

If you buy the eshopps overflow box comes as a kit, everything you need to install the box drill bit and template. I also did this but went with the L size to run a bean animal drain. 40b/20l sump

The eclipse comes with a drill bit to drill the hole. The only thing you need to buy is the drill bit to drill your return. I got mine from bulk reef supply.

I have the same 40g breeder from Petco with a 20g tall sump. I drilled the tank and used the Glass Holes overflow and return kits; which come with everything, including the glass drill bits. For the sump I had glass dividers cut to size for 3 chambers and built my own stand. It’s a great size tank. Here’s some pics!

Very nice! I thought it was a good upgrade from my current 28 gallon Jbj Nano.

Did the plumbing come in a kit?

I drilled my 40 breeder myself. Bought a kit from glassholes. Com.

It was super easy. I drilled it in the center of the back pane. I actually glued the wooden template that came with the kit to my tank(I suppose duct tape would work as well). Once the template was in place I put water in the template and very slowly drilled the hole. You want to keep the area wet and not push on the drill. Let the weight of the drill be all the pressure you need. And make sure you put a towel in the tank under the hole so the glass slug doesn’t crack the other side.

Just be very aware of when the hold breaks through; don’t let the drill drop through the hole.

If you’re going with a hang on overflow I would go with a CPR box. Pricy but I learned the hard way that cheap overflows are junk. Never had an issue with my CPR overflow

My 40g build thread below has the entire setup. It might be helpful!

Check out the Modular Marine overflows. I bought the 800GPH for my 40 breeder. It’s dead silent and has 3 drainpipes. One is an emergency in case a snail or something clogs one. If I could do it over again I’d go 1 size bigger on the overflow. I think that’s a 1200 GPH.
