What is the best hang on back for a 40 gallon and what should you run in it for filtration. Would like to have some coral and 4 to 6 small fish.

Im using an AquaClear 70 on mine......i only use floss pad like pinky filter pad and ocassional carbon. Check out my tank thread badge to see more details

Best is subjective, and there are a lot of threads about this, but I used to run a SeaChem Sicce Tidal 75 on my 40 before drilling it. I like that HOB because it can provide some surface skimming where others may not.

I also packed it with filter floss. Cheap and effective.

And you can drop a bag of carbon in there if you want.

The 75 provides a lot of flow for a 40 breeder but it will build up worms, calcification, etc. and need to be cleaned every few months to be in tip top shape. Any HOB will. Just something to be aware of.

Self priming is critical so it can restart on its own after a power interruption. Seachem Tidal is self priming and uses a Sicce pump which is also positive

Totally agree, mine only failed to restart after about two years of use and being encrusted. If I had been more diligent about maintenance and had done a deep cleaning every 6 months or so, I likely would have not observed that issue.

Never had trouble with not restarting...dont believe the parrots. Seachem Tidal filter doesnt filter worth a you know what compared to the tried and well tested aquaclears. Imo the aquaclear is 10 times better, i have both filters and tried the Seachem first and it is terrible and the blue parts in your tank......What the heck were they thinking and seachem. When you know you know

It's a Garbage filter the seachem imo....its huge in your tank, looks dumb takes up ton space and filters terrible. The worst part besides the ugly blue colors of plastic in your tank.... is the skimmer that doesnt even work. The "high priced odd shaped filter pads" that dont work , all the while the filter by passes most the water and doesnt even filter it. So ya All hype and no filtration.

This is just my opinion based on actually trying both filters for myself and not just repeating false narratives on the internet.

I like the Marineland penguin 200 hob filters. Toss the bio wheel. Cheap carbon filters are available, and you can buy emtpy cartridges you put your own floss in. Holds 2 filter cartridges. Fits peninsula style on a 10g aqueon aquarium. And no mods necessary to make it a passive algae turf scrubber, just hang a piece of mesh off the tab and grow algae from the display light.
