45 Gallon Shallow Reef Build

It's hard to put everything in a thread all the time. It's not like a tank is one's only responsibilities.
I'm retired.

It's a good shop. They had a great selection of Eyphillia if you're interested in Torches and Hammers. Most I've ever seen there. Said he had more Torches in the back still to frag but probably 5-6 different kinds on display. I've been on the lookout for a nice Frogspawn but nobody seems to have any of those anywhere. All my locals have been out for months.
A popular member on here with an amazing tank actually offered me some so I'm going to buy those from him when he's ready.

Now you have the most popular thread on here. hahaha
It's your defining "Hi Mom!" moment!
She would be so proud that I finally made it!

"To my football coach who caught me burning down out back and told me I was a dirtball and would never amount to anything - shizzle!!!!!" - Based on a true story.

It's the only way I'm doing it. I quit 8 years ago.

I got tired of people calling me constantly when I was trying to eat dinner or take a shower.
A lot of these companies have zero respect. I got fed up one day turned everything in and left.

I'm just about to get started and hit my stride.. hopefully. Planning on sitting for my master electrician license before the new year. Sure my spare time is going to disappear quickly 😳 that's when I'll do my new build and I'll get in R2R and brainstorm how to make it as low maintenence as possible!

I am very fortunate to be in the position that the Dainty Dictator and I are in. Had I been forced to retire (medically) on just my income, I wouldn't have the hot rod.

One of my best friends is a licensed master electrician that owns his own company. If you ever want to pick his brain let me know and I'll put you in touch.

My biggest issues is going to be the bidding/quote side of it. I think my biggest hurdle will be how overly honest, and sympathetic I am, and I'll feel bad when I do the math and realize how large the bill is 😂

Electrical is a good trade.
Industrial Electric is good money. 👍

I used to hire industrial electricians to do large DC Power plants, rectification, etc.
Those jobs can cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.

Good money in that. And it seems like data centers are coming up everywhere, so there's that.
Nothing wrong with making a sacrifice of a few years to learn how to do something well that pays well.
That's a smart investment in my book.

As someone who writes fairly high dollar quotes for interstate moving services let me assure you that you'll very quickly get over how large the bill is. As long as you are providing a quality service for a fair price people will pay for it. I'm right up front with clients about everything, probably to my detriment, but people can smell it out when you aren't being genuine with them and they will not buy from you. Honesty and Integrity are paramount but that doesn't mean you should feel bad about what you are charging for it. Quality service is not, and should not, be cheap. Don't gouge, but charge what you are worth and you'll be fine.

Thanks bud! I do commercial right now. Wiring up a car wash and man, I keep thinking, short of pulling the permit, the rest of this is all me.. so why am I doing this for someone else?

Well put and makes a lot of sense! I'll start out doing side gigs before I go out on my own, probably some long weekends, but im sure I'll figure it out pretty quickly and the quotes won't be as daunting. After I screw a few up and under bid of course haha

Half of those jobs are paid for with subsidies anyway. I wouldnt feel bad about it. The money is spent one way or another. Quote it out son!!!!! 🤣 👍

That's right!!!

One thing I learned leaving corporate america and doing my own thing is that we waste our potential by NOT doing so. There's no problem with spending a number of years at a company and getting good at what you do, but after you reach that point, you need to be collecting the checks and not being thrown a cookie like a good dog.

Really, it's the difference between paying the bank and the bank paying you.

Yeah, no. You'll get over that real quick.
