45g Cube - Inappropriate Reefer

Hey reefers, I wish I started this member tank thread when I first started this tank a year ago, but better late than never! :)

I have always been a huge fan of cube tanks due to it's modern dimension, I got lucky and picked up a 24" x 24" x 18" setup from a local reefer last April, it came with almost everything I needed which was great, because I am clueless when it comes to equipment and plumbing.



For this tank, I documented the entire process on YouTube with no sugarcoating. I will the highlights from my tank from this point forward, if you are interested in some of the older happenings (eg: failed Ritteri anemone attempt, Bangaii Cardinals mating, Yasha Gobies love triangle, Dino battle... etc), feel free to check out my channel for some history of the tank. I will be sharing future new stuff here!

I have been battling algae issue most of the time since the tank has been up, I finally got a TDS meter last week and tested the water I have been using (Tap as well as RO water from Walmart), here is the result...

To combat the dino / cyano / diatom, my tank is going into a blackout with H2O2 dosing. I had done this with good success a few months ago so I am doing this again hoping for a similar result. Yes, I will be getting a RO/DI unit shortly... (about time!)

Did a 3.5 days light room + h2o2 dosing... all was well for a few days and then algae returned. :( The war continues...

Updated the aquascaping a bit and added something pretty controversial into the tank - Blue Clove. Seems like people either love them or hate them, not unlike Xenia; although it does have the potential to spread like wild fire...

Since the last update, in order to combat the algae issue I have revamped the entire sump. Changes were:

1) Pulled out the refugium's sand bed
2) Bought BRS's RO/DI unit and started using good water
3) Added media reactor running Carbon & GFO
4) Upgraded return pump and refugium pump for more waterflow
5) Started adding kalk in ATO water

While the tank still has a very minor dusting of algae on sand bed once in awhile in a corner, for the most part the tank is pretty much free of algae! :) Here is a video of how the tank looks recently:
