46 bow front overflow drains

me and my buddy are going to be drilling my 46 bow front so i can get rid of the hob overflow i currently have but was wondering how many drain lines should i drill out and what size should they be it is going to be a right corner overflow plz move to correct thread

Your in the right spot! I would maybe go with 3/4" drain and 1/2" return for that size tank. Depending on what size pump your planning on using.

Btw there's bulkhead fittings at farm and fleet for smaller sizes if your having a hard time finding them.

the pump i have now is a rio 2500 at about 2.5-3ft i have the eshopps 800 overflow and it cant keep with the pump i have to turn it down we were thinking 2 1" drains 1 as a main and one as a fail safe n then a 3/4 return wich is what im running now

I have duel 1" on my tank that runs about 800 gph through.

another question i plan on draining my water into into another tank while i drill it and also putting my live rock fish and corals in it also but what do i do with the sand im hoping to only have my tank down for a few days and after put the rock sand and everything back into the tank and maybe doing a water change when i get it back together

How old is it? Most people recommend changing sand out every so often anyways. Might be a good time to just get it done.

Uh yah it's not very old. If it's a couple days I'm sure it could just be thrown in a bucket. With water and be fine.

How did it come out? I just drilled my 53 for a 700 gph overflow from glass holes that used and 1 1/2 inch bulkhead and 2 3/4 for the returns.
