50 gallon with 40 breeder sump

I've had a reef tank for over a year now and I started out with a 20 long then moved to a 40 breeder. I'm getting ready to build it out for my "forever" tank. My question is this. I also have a spare 50 gallon tank available would I be good to use the 50 gallon tank as my display with the 40 breeder setup as my sump or should I just stick with the 40 breeder as the display and run the 20 long as my sump. Current population is 2 clowns, and 2 dotty backs. Half a dozen crabs, a chocolate chip star which I will be re-homing or possibly trading for a sand sifting star. And a big snail.

Depends on how close you are to upgrading.

I would hold off. No reason to stress everything only to move than again in a short time frame

That's why I've been contemplating either using the empty 20 long as my sump or using the 40 as the sump. If I used the 40 I'd just move everything to the 20 while the new tank runs it's cycles then transfer over the inhabitants once the cycles are complete. I'd be using pre cycled rock and sand to boost everything along regardless

Exactly. That's why I'm trying to figure which tank would best be utilized as a sump. The 40 or the 20 long. I know people say bigger is better but would the 40 be more beneficial than the 20

Yes. Theres a lot more room for equipment and more water volume.

40 breeder is fine. You can do lots of things with a large sump
