60g breeder SPS reef

Hi all just wanted to share my 60b mixed reef. This tank was supposed to be larger with sump and skimmer but I had a time and budget crunch and decided to just set it up as is.

No skimmer
No sump

For now, I only run pumps for flow, an Eheim surface skimmer, and rely on the 60lbs or rock to biological filter the tank.

Thanks! About 25lbs came from my previous reef, so those rocks were about 18 months matured.

Here's a pic from really early on back in April, it took about 6 weeks for the rocks to look uniform.

Still thriving!

I dose All for Reef (about 35ml a day) and a DIY calcium nitrate solution (30ml per week).

LPS just do ok, but non-acro SPS seem happiest in the tank, which has a ton of flow and lots of light.

Despite having @BeanAnimal tell me in an idiot for thinking I need more than a 100w heater, this tank actually runs a 300w and a backup 100w on an inkbird and they run plenty this time of year in my cold Canadian basement.

A lot of my Euphyllia was wiped out when I brought home a hammer which must have had brown jelly, so I’m just avoiding those moving forward. Hard to get proper meds here in Canada.

Just found out my factory (in Canada) is closing due to tariffs and instability in our US market - I guess there is Chinese version of our product that is lower quality but won’t be hit with the same tariffs. Our US business will all be switching to the Chinese components and manufacturing, and servicing will likely become local.

I’ve lost my job.

We’re not sure what we’re going to do - likely sell the house and move. That means this tank likely won’t be up for more than another month.

Sure does. Strangest part is we build products made from 80% US parts and steel…and now our US customers will be buying 100% Chinese products and components. So our American suppliers are also losing out.

Just doesn’t make any sense. Not sure many Canadians will ever be able to look to our “friends” to the south the same again. :(

Things are really messed up right now and people's lives are being upended because of it. It's really unfortunate.

So although I did lose my job, I have a 2nd interview this week and my wife got a raise so we're going to try to make it work here. Fingers crossed!

No new reef additions since the job loss but the tank is still humming along. Dealing with a bit of a flatworm outbreak right now, but it's tough to find a solution while keeping up the "tank bred only" rule.

Cool yellow sponge that just keeps growing larger. Some die off where the red cyano is due to tearing a coral plug outta there.

Kenya “pineapple green” tree I had to trim as it was going into a wavemakers. Elasticed it to a shell, hoping for a recovery! It’s being real dramatic.
