80/20 stand planning

Hey guys - I am planning a new 80 gallon build. The footprint of the tank is going to be 48 x 24.

I have seen some great 80/20 stands, but very little details about pricing. If I DIY it, what kind of cost am i looking at for a basic stand for just the extrusions and fasteners (no doors, top or bottom shelf).

great build...i'll use it for inspiration. What size extrusions were these? Do you have a parts list?
Do you have a link to the LED snaps and the power management system you used?
which part did you use to mount the wood panels?

mine is 96x32x36 and cost about 1360 delivered to local 80/20 dealer. I gave a basic drawing to the dealer and he sent it to 80/20 CAD Dept with a spec of supporting 4000 lbs. It came in cut and predrilled, all I had to do was assemble the marked pieces

Can I ask about some specifics on your stand? Do you have a build thread? I’m looking at getting a stand like this for an 84x30x30 tank, the stand will be 36 inches high. Did you get any extra length on your stand (like a 1/4 inch around) or just the measurements of the tank?

Did you put something over it or just the tank directly on the rails?

And I’m worried about leveling feet...that’s a lot of pressure on just a few square inches (my room is slab on grade so the floor shouldn’t be an issue). Maybe I’m worried for nothing as they all seem to have them.

Finally did they give any direction on if the legs have to be equally spaced? I’m wondering about getting the sump in there.

I ordered mine from tnutz.com and it was about $190. Mine uses 1” extrusions as it’s only a small tank. Dimensions are 24x36 and 36” tall. That cost is just for the aluminum and fasteners (actually over half the cost was fasteners).

Depending on your area look for suppliers who deal in used or "scrap" material. Here in the Twin Cities we have a company called Next Day Automation that deals in surplus and salvaged industrial gear. That store (and I assume others like it) sell extrusion and fasteners by the pound. I bought some heavy duty extrusion from them and fasteners to build a CNC router a few years ago for around $100. I picked up another lot of extrusion from a local auction site. That 80/20 extrusion had been built into a shop cart. I dismantled it and rebuilt it into the stand for the CNC. At auction that extrusion and all the fasteners that held it together was around $30.

no stain?
i am preparing a top from birch plywood and tried the special walnut stain, but don't like it at all. Thinking about sanding it down and restaining, but i love the color you got with just straight up poly.

No, I did stain it first. It is gunstock by minwax. I apply a heavy coat with a foam brush. I let it set for 15 minutes then I wipe it off with paper towels. I let that dry at least 12 hrs and then I apply a second coat and let it stand 15 min before I wipe it off. You want stain to soak into the wood and not puddle on the surface so wiping it off is key. By leaving a heavy coat soak for a while it makes the color darker and richer.

The finish you start with is key as well I sand everything with 80 grit then 160 grit and finish with 220 grit paper. The smooth surface is why I need to let the stain soak in for so long
