We had a large snowflake eel at the store that bit and held on to the tail of a common sting ray. It scared the heck out of me and did some damage, but luckily the eel healed over time and I was able to sell him. The eel got moved to a different tank and sold. I never thought it would have been a problem having them together, but there ya go.
Yeah, it's sort of expected that they will tear eachother apart.

huh. If you can keep them in reef/fowlr I should be able to keep them with sharks just fine.
Most bites from blunt toothed eels are a case of mistaken identity, especially during feeding times. Sedentary tankmates are at far greater risk. Most fish will be more active, and thus in less danger than stingrays and benthic sharks.

If the eels are fed until satiated, they are much less likely to have mistaken bites. Also, as they get more comfortable and familiar with their surroundings and tankmates, their are seldom incidents.

Understandable, yes. Makes sense to me. Whether I'll get an eel? Maybe, maybe not, but now I'll actually consider it, rather than just keep it out of consideration.
