So we have a few acans, most started with 2 or 3 heads and a lot of them have grown many new heads and others have the same amount of heads as when we got them. All of them open and are feed at the same times and frequency. All of them look happy, so what give?

Just because it's the same coral doesn't mean it will all grow at the same rate. Take zoas for example, our rastas out grew all others then bam bams grew faster than hornets but slower than rastas. Even the acan garden we kept, all 7 frags grew at different rates.

How long did it take to grow another head? My rainbow acan has 3 polyps and they are quite healthy with good extensions. I glued the frag plug to a rubble .

I guess I need to be more patient as my tank is still young (started in mid Oct). My neon hammer is where I see the most growth on my tank so far.

I've always had really good luck with duncan corals as well. They grow well for even in the newest setups.

for the ones im comparing, we got together and had them for 4 months all are getting bigger/better polyp extension. but as you will see below the little one with 3 heads has not grown any new heads that i can see. Compared to the others which started with 2 or 3 heads on the top, but as you can see which have grown many new heads not counting the other side of the frag.

this one is the one in ? started with the 3 but have gotten bigger

these however have grown very well (just feed, started with the 2 large heads on top)

also started with the 2 head on top, new heads are getting close to the same size as the original ones.

started with a 2 head (3mouth) and again many new heads under them.

Will it grow faster if its glued to a larger flat rock or will it do just as well sitting on the sand?

Thanks,
Mark

I purchased a bunch of acans over a 1yr period, the growth was all over the place.
Unlike Lords, they don’t play well together and need space, so thats one factor.
Another factor is the growth rate is reported as “slow”, I dunno, I’d say amongst acans that growth varies from slow to moderately fast (thats under low-medium par 60-100-ish
