I have a 50 year old coral skeleton my uncle brought back after serving with the marines in the pacific. Im thinking it would be a really cool thing to let it be back in the water. Are there any cautions? Its a rather large shelf piece and would look absolutely gorgeous

as long as you give it a good rinse it should be fine you said its from the ocean so you should be fine I have a dead skeloton to and gsp grew all over it wich made it look alive

I added a few pieces of dead coral to my tank, no downsides. There are upsides though, as the skeleton is in the tank it will slowly dissolve (not visibly, the process takes many years) since water is a universal solvent. As it dissolves it will increase calcium and alkalinity, just gives the tank a very small boost.
