I have a clownfish that has been the only clown in the tank for around two two and a half years. Would it be possible to add another clown in the tank if it were significantly smaller so it hopefully would be more submissive to the larger. Or, would the existing not tolerate a new clown in his environment.

It would be fine, but I would get them to meet each other slowly. I would acclimate the new one in a in-tank breeder box for a little time.. about 30 min to an hour to see how they react to each other before letting it go free in your system.. it will also be much easier to remove from the tank if there is a problem.
