Okie, back to more backdated updates on my equipment list.

Nutrients export

For mechanical filtration, other than simple trusty polyester filter wool, I opted to use back the same Monzter SM251 that I used for my old tank, since its oversized and it should still be more than enough for my current setup. After 5 years of usage the skimmer and both its pumps are still pulling thick skimmate out of my tank, and I get to skip the run in phase! Probably Skimz, our local Singapore born brand, can really give other premium brands a run for their money :)

Managed to prop my skimmer to the right height with a few ceramic bricks.

Another trusted equipment from my old tank is my Macroalgae Reactor MBR157, again from Skimz! Other than helping my tank extract nutrients through the growth of chaeto, it will probably help to breed lots of pods that probably sustain a couple of my dragonets.. Chose to go with the macroalgae reactor again instead of a refugium so that I can maximise the volume vs foot print in sump. Not to mention, the Skimz reactor looks good in the sump and doesn’t cause a mess by keeping algae growth within the reactor.

Last piece of nutrient export is a Skimz fluidized reactor FM100 to run chemical filtration. I run rowaphos on it to keep my phosphate at bay.

One useful tip that I have learnt along the way, is to T off circulation from return pump, to feed the various reactors. Other than bigger less pump, it reduces the amount of heat that multiple pump produces in the sump.

In this case, my FR takes water from my UV Sterillizer, which in turn gets its water from my Vectra.

Maintaining Alkalinity

With a larger water volume, I ditched my usual automatic dosing preferences, since it’s too troublesome and costly to sustain the dosing of KH/CA.

Therefore I invested in a big butt Calcium Reactor from Skimz, CM202 and a Art Pro Series solenoid. Lucky I still managed to squeeze it into my sump. First time CR user so I have gotten a lot of tips from my LFS and other local reefers.

Currently I am setting the CO2 counter at about 60 and effluent at about 100ml per minute.

A downside of using a CR is definitely the impact on PH of your tank. Given my tank location and make which leads to poorer air circulation, I am hovering around 7.8 to 8.0 everyday. Have been trying out various method to bump up the ph, will share more in due time :)

Not sure if anyone of you know, my previous mixed reef had a major tank crash in 2017 in which all of my fishes and sps were wiped out. So here are some things that I broke my piggy bank for, to prevent another heartbreaking incident.

Battery Backup

Definitely something that is worth getting, considering the cost vs any expensive fish or coral that you are getting. So I went with the Battery Backup from ecotech, mainly due to its compatibility with Vectra that I am using. When power goes off, the Vectra will maintain sufficient circulation for both my display and frag/lps tank while help arrives. Some may ask why didn’t I chose to power my wavemakers instead, since the battery can last much longer.. guess I only need a few hours window and the return pump will keep both my tanks circulated.

By the way, I also get sms alerts from my iSocket on power failures, and the device helps me monitor my tank temperature too.

Aquarium computer

With more and more sophisticated monitoring and automated equipment, and more tech savvy Reefers, it is finally time to also jump onto the bang-wagon and get my self an APEX 2016.

APEX comes with a few lab grade probes to monitor some key parameters, specifically Tank salinity, temperature and ph, on an app, for me. Decided to drop the ORP probe and link an additional PH Probe (Milkaukee's) to the computer as a pH monitor for my Calcium Reactor. By the way, managed to get a nice holder (cheaper version than neptune's) to hold all the probes for me.

Fundamentally, APEX helps control my equipment for me, based on configurations, like timing, or parameter based settings like ph, temperature etc. Mounted my Energy Bar to the wall and I am relying on this to help on or off specific equipment based on the configured settings. For example, the additional ph probe I installed into my CR helps me cut the Solenoid power when ph in the reactor is less than 6.3. Still trying to learn more about the potential of this aquarium computer along the way and I would love to hear more about how APEX can make my equipment work better for me!

Another new equipment that I invested in, to prevent wipe of fishes due to diseases, is a Aqua ultraviolet 25W uv Sterillizer. But the important function that it is serving now, is to keep the tank water crystal clear, on top of being the nicest looking UV sterillizer in the market~

By the way, chaeto growth is looking good hur :)

By the way, I really like things neat and organised.

Here’s a picture of my controller console / power supply panel. Ie my attempt to hide messy wirings and centralized the controllers that I always need to adjust. Especially since I have equipment from different brands and not all are smart control.

And my mini storeroom under the stairs. No more nagging from wife taking up real estate in the living room and a little work station to do my reef chores!

Looking forward to comments and more suggestions!

Side tracked..

tried an orange filter with only blue led and took a top down shot of my fish room tank.. not “real” real, but I can totally understand why everybody is digging this look!

Some snapshots of the different stages of renovation!

342f3366630197f0a2b50f97a7ded2a0.jpg

And the tank is delivered! This time around, I opted for a galvanized iron frame to allow full access (without a center pillar) to my sump.

Guess it is always a little more challenging to build the carpentry around a hooded tank. Good thing I had a team of experienced carpenters working on the tank cabinet. Here's a shot of them fitting the suspended hood to the tank like a glove.

a444d12ec00eea23720db94bce4d812a.jpg

The almost completed carpentry for the display tank. Looks pretty much like how I imagined it. Also included an air vent to allow air circulation to main living space. Notice that the air vent's carpentry is designed in a way to prevent light from the tank to be “exposed” on the exterior.

With the carpentry almost up, next up in action was my trusty tank builders. They had quite a tough time working in confined spaces to fulfill a rather demanding piping job..

I thought they did an amazing job with the setup and piping work. Everything looks neat and professional!

Stay tuned for more updates. Meanwhile, do share with me your comments :)
This is amazing - Thanks for sharing!! You could have left the back of the tank clear to get an extra viewing angle while standing in the fish room! Just a thought…

Yup! It was definitely a thought I had! Would have also made Maintainence a little easier to be able to see from the fish room.

But I have to make do with this as the stretch of wall on the left of the tank, is hiding a pillar that I can’t hack away. So I can only have a incomplete clear view from the back which is weird :(

Some updates on my sps dominated. Lost my Queen and anthias due to an ich outbreak. Probably a mistake when I got lazy and threw in some fishes without utilizing my QT…

Oh well, added a new batch of anthias after proper QT and a week has past and so far no casualties!

A video update for all!

Anyway, also got a new toy recently! Spot it in the photo below. So far aesthetic, installation and calibration has been pretty cool!

Will monitor and do a simple review here soon!
