Algae Issue

Howdy everyone,

The past few weeks I have battling this algae of sorts that I cannot figure out exactly what it is.
It came to become after I did a 20% water change the next day it came out of nowhere. It covers most of my sand all of my rock.

I then proceeded to do another water change a few days last because I sucked up as much of the algae I could off of the rocks and sand. Then replenished the saltwater.


I’m just chasing an ID and hopefully a solution for me to help me out as it look as a lot of my corals are dying as well.

I’m under the assumption that this is dinos but needing some other opinions

Could be cyano. How old is the tank? Are you doing water changes to address any issue (prior to the algae issue). How’s the chemistry?

I had not done a water change in a couple of weeks so I thought give the tank a really good clean I did a water change and scrubbed all the algae off of the glass and back wall.

Chemistry seems to be okay last time i checked but, I have only a salifert phosphate kit and find it hard to depict what my phos is.

I took it to a shop to get tested and they claimed my phosphate was .3, they proceeded to get me to use phos remover which i then used like the bare minimum for my tank and I noticed my corals didnt like it. So i believed the test was wrong so I stopped adding it. I then took it back to get retested because I felt like the reading was wrong, which then they told there was 0 phos so i proceeded to feed a little bit heavier and then everything was looking good. Then did the water change and now here i am.

Ill have to do some tests to make sure my chem is good.

Probably dinos then, not cyano, cyanos red and slimy. You could order a microscope but i feel it a waste of time. You may need to get a uv sterilizer but for now get your nutrients back up, likely occurred due to bottoming out phosphates, try to manually remove whatever you can, and turn down the lights a little bit

Is it possible i remove as much as possible then just black out for a day or 2?

Im not sure how effective a blackout is against dinos but you could try, if you have corals though i would advise against it as it would stress them and may not even impact the dinos

What at-home test are you doing?

Is your sandbed getting enough flow?

How long and how intensely are you running lights?

CUC and filtration?

Alk, phos mag and cal are salifert and the nitrate one is just some fritz one

Sand bed seems to be getting enough flow.

Lights are usually on from about midday to 10 o’clock with hour ramp up and down. Intensity I’m running both of the lights at about 35%.

Filtration running a skimmer and roller mat. I also added Cheeto that runs for about 6 hours over night.
Cleanup crew, I have like 20 or so trochus and about the same with nasarius snails.
