Algae Reactor.... is anyone running one with chaeto ?

Is anyone running this type of Algae Reactor with Chaeto and questions are based on if you have nutrients to support chaeto? :

1. Does this type of reactor actually work like having it in a sump?

2. Does it stay alive in these devices or just melt away from either not the right kind of Flow or bad Light.

I used clear 3”PVC and made a remote algae reactor/refugium. Initially, I wrapped LED light string on outside but film algae covered inside glass restricting light transmission. So, I found marine grade underwater light string with IP68 rating. I suspect that I will be required to remove light string to clean off algae.

Not sure what you asked about nutrients and chaeto. Chaetomorphy requires major and minor nutrients: N, P, K are the Big 3.

When I had Gracilaria Parvispora analyzed at regional agriculture lab the ratios of N/P/K was 30/1/150. I don’t remember the trace minerals.

My diy remote Algae reactor has a matrix of egg crate and stands more than 3’ tall and is full of pods. I do’t harvest seaweed and leave the light on 24/7. The sides are covered with coralline obstructing my view. While water does run continually, I maximize pod transfer by turning pump off for a few seconds then back in again.

I bought the one in the picture....had a flood because of it... after a few months of running the LEDs weakened the acrylic and it sprung a leak which popped the LED strip and lucky did not start a fire...instead a got gallons of water on the floor, lucky I was home it could have been much worse..when you smell burnt electronics you know somethings up.

So with that said....its a very bad idea to wrap LEDs around a acrylic cylinder. Leason learned.

That's one of the reasons I wanted to make hermetically sealed LED lights.
