Algae Turf Scrubbers

Hey guys,

Anyone have upflow algae scrubber? I'm interested in getting one in my display tank (don't have a sump) but am afraid of potential air bubbles causing salt creep. Is this a problem for anyone and are there cheaper alternatives than the Santa Monica Algae scrubbers?

Maybe a PVC tube with light inside? Could use a black one to blend it in.
