I've looked into making my own as well and found the Fijicube ones to be the best value. By the time you buy all the acrylic, glue, etc. and put it all together you end up spending pretty close to what a fijicube kit would cost. I guess if you can find the acrylic cheap enough it would be worth it, but I wasn't able to.

Does it have to be acrylic? Would some black plastic work?

I have a 3.7 pico aio. the panel on the back is plastic. I feel that would be ideal, very cheap easy to work with and easy to remove. I assume I would just have to make sure the plastic I use doesn't leach anything into the water

Jax Racks. They have a website and stuff on eBay. I know they do custom as well. They have an aio insert for a 40 breeder on eBay. I’m sure they can do a 20 long.
