I was given this angel today in an effort to help it out. Prior owner thought it might be HLLE.

Before I start treatment, any advice? I have it in a small QT tank for the night and wanted to ask the experts before I start with treatment.

This is severe facial erosion associated with HLLE and fish will likely not restore its facial appearance.
HLLE which cause pits and flesh missing mainly in tangs, angels and some rabbitfish. It is often caused by poor water quality, high use of carbon, poor water quality (elevated nitrate and ammonia) and inadequate/poor diet. It is not life threating in any way but offers secondary infection in some cases.
Maintaining GOOD water quality and diet are often the fixes and with severe cases, some healing.
Some foods to feed tang are :
LRS herbivore diet
Formula 2 flake and frozen
TDO Pellets
small plankton
Hikari Marine cuisine
Ocean nutrition veggie diet
spirulina brine shrimp
mysis shrimp
Prime reef
Nori seaweed basted with garlic extract

Add selcon vitamins to foods occasionally

Yes, that is HLLE. It is pretty widespread, I can see isolated spots further back. Did the previous owner mention how long it has looked like this? If longer than a few months, it is likely to be permanent scarring.

There is no chemical or medication for this. Just clean water, don’t use carbon, and feed the fish a varied diet.

Here is an article I wrote based on a research paper I had published back in 2011:
