Im looking to get some insight on keep anthias, never have kept them before so i have a few questions.... one would be feeding, are they as hard to feed as people make them sound? how often? and Which is the better beginner species, lyretails or bartlett's?

I have had issues with anthias until I learned that they need to eat a lot. I still have on female though and she eats flakes and pellets. Im going to some more anthias as well and plan on getting an auto feeder for them.

Okay so you did get yours to take man made foods... what type do you have? Anyone else want to add to the convo?

hey i've had my 7 Bartletts and 5 Lyretails for a few months now in my 180 and they do great eating anything you feed them practically you just have to start with mysis and the reef plankton frozen foods...thats how i got them to start eating and now i cant get them to stop...as far as which is an easier species to maintain they are both fairly easy but Lyretails have a more structured hierarchy making purchasing of bartletts sometimes easier for someone with not as much experience with them but both are perfectly good beginner anthias.

oh but as far as getting them to eat flake or pelletts i wont even really try to yet their colors have stayed fantastically and id rather them stick to eating what they like but my 2 smallest bartletts will devour pelletts if i put a few in sometimes...the larger ones i'm not sure about.

I've had my Lyretail for 3+ years now. I don't really do anything special for this fish. I feed a small pinch of pellets once a day. Sometimes, but rarely, twice.

I have had my Bartlett's for 6 months now. He came in eating anything and has continued to eat anything, frozen, flake, or pellet. His color, activity, and temperament are great, and I rarely feed more than once a day.

Okay here's my setup... its a 210g, right now i only have 10 baby blue green chromis... i really wanted to try and put possibly 5 Lyretail (1 male, 4 females) along with an array of other fish... i want the anthias because they will swim all over, like chromis, just a different color. But i work from 530 to 630 everyday and i wouldnt really be able to feed them in the morning ( maybe i could at first) so thats why i wanna make sure i can get them eating flakes, like my other fish do...

I have 2 lyretails and feed them once a day with the rest of fish..1x1 algae, 1/2" square of Rods food, and small pinch of formula 1.

I only have a single male and it gets fed once daily with the rest. It now eats flake but St first it only ate cyclopeze and mysis for a few months.

My Lyretails and Bartletts are probably my easiest anthias to keep because they eat almost everything and because they eat larger food itmes such as mysis etc.. they can be fed only once a day, but some my other more finicky anthias that only eat smaller foods need to be fed numerous time a day.

if you got all females your more likely for success males will tend to be overly aggressive in the beginning...my experience with lyretails atleast
