Hey everyone I’m AnxiousReefer and this will be my build/journal thread. Before I dive into everything a little background information about me.

I’ve been in the reefing hobby for about a year now. It all started with a conversation I was having with my fiancé about how cool it would be to have a fish tank with a shark in it. As we looked into everything we needed to set up such tank we then realized we knew absolutely nothing about having a fish tank let alone keeping a shark. So what we decided to do was start with a beginner tank. The choice we made was to get the RedSea Reefer 170 for our very first tank. We bought it at our lfs Fragbox. The owner March was very helpful in helping us with basically a starter kit for our tank. He advised us on return pump, wavemakers, light, skimmer.

Fast forward a few months I had a really bad cyano outbreak and sort of gave up the hobby for few months. After trial and error I finally solved my cyano outbreak with GFO

For lighting March advised me to get Ai Prime HD as these lights would be good for my size tank to grow coral.

I’m currently running David Saxby’s setting.

The coral that got my addiction going is the Utter Chaos Zoa. As soon as I saw this at my lfs I knew I had to have it. The way it just pop under the light is what drew me. Once I got it home and into my tank.Only few days in the tank it started growing new heads currently there are two new ones growing. Once I saw that and felt the success I had to get more.

When I bought the Utter Chaos I also bought Jason Fox Paranoid Favia.I’m not sure if it was already encrusting when I bought it but the right side of the frag is starting to encrust.

Another eye popper for me was the Ultra Rainbow Acan Lord. The colour is still there but the skeleton is showing I know that can’t be good. I made the mistake of gluing it right away into rock. Without finding out the best spot for it. All I did was turn the rock the opposite way so the Acan is further away from the light the original position I had it.
If anyone could offer some expertise as to why it is showing its skeleton and what I can do to fix it is greatly appreciated.

My final purchase of the day was a Red Montipora Cap. It’s my first sps in the tank I chose this one because I was told they are a good beginner sps to start with and that they are hardy. It was my first coral that I glued and it didn’t come on a plug so I got some glue on the coral. I’m hoping it will grow over it.

I Bought a few more yesterday I kind of went overboard told the fiancé I only spent 10$ ;)With the new purchases I think I’m going to have a bit more patience and leave them where they are for few days then move it to a position I would like them to be and see if they like it or not.

Acan Lord
At first I didn’t want to get it because it didn’t have that eye popping look. But then I saw that it was a red Acan and two heads where green so I felt like I was getting a deal lol. Also I wanted another Acan lord to see if my ultra acan lord would open up

Can someone also ID this Acan lord for me.
There is one more frag that I bought it may be a Razzle Dazzle Zoa frag. But it hasn’t opened up yet so I’m not sure

Before I made this thread I had 2xOcellaris Clownfish. But a week ago I noticed the bigger one that I had wasn’t acting normal. First I noticed he was hiding in a cave and wouldn’t move from there. Then few days ago he moved out of the cave and was just swimming in one spot. This didn’t seem like normal behaviour so I started watching YouTube videos and going on google to find answers. I also went to my lfs and asked them what it may have been. They said that either it’s stressed out by an aggressive fish in the tank, flukes, or ich. So I found out through my searches that I can do a freshwater dip. I took the clown that I suspected was ill and performed the FW dip. I didn’t have a air stone for aeration so I used a spare return pump that I normally use for mixing salt water. It push the clown around very aggressively and I saw that it wasn’t moving so I stopped the FW dip after 3min. I removed the clown and placed him in this hospital box that I bought. The clown was still breathing heavily and I didn’t see any opaque white spots after the dip. Unfortunately after I placed the aggressive clownfish with the bigger one did not make it.
The other Ocellaris Clownfish started becoming very aggressive and I notice it many times darting and attack my 2xGalaxy Clarkii Clownfish I finally caught him by removing all my rocks and this having to do redue my aquascape.

Next up is my fiancé’s favourite in the tank Green Mandarin
F9639936-67E3-4467-B8EE-70557C3906C4.jpeg

Another trip to one of lfs lead me to get a Red Ruby Dragonet. I’ve read that having two dragonets in such a small tank gives a very small percentage at survival only if there’s a refugium that has copepods. Unfortunately I couldn’t set one up as my sump has no space for one. So I opted for the other option to teach the dragonets to eat frozen. I was successful thus I am hopeful they will survive.

I will reuse this picture to introduce my Yellow Clown Goby because right now the lights are too blue to get a decent picture.

My final fish that I have in my tank is Six Line Wrasse. I love the colour it has almost like a rainbow.

I went a bit crazy on the inverts because at the time I didn’t have any coral and I thought it would help with my cyano outbreak. There’s 1xTurbo Snail, 2xTrochus Snail, 5xNassarius Snail(I enjoy watching them pop out of the sand when I’m feeding), 5xScarlet hermit Crab, 1xStrawberry Conch, 20xdwarf hermit crabs(Red,Blue,Black)

Continuing on from yesterday. I was able to get a decent picture of my wrasse.

FEEDING TIME!

I was feeding pellets to my fish at first and they would eat but it wasn’t that interesting to look at. So recently I switched over to frozen food and they seem to love it more.

I rotate all three frozen foods usually which ever food I decide to use. I would use up the row eg. spirulina brine and omega brine have 4 cubes per row and mysis has 5.

I spot feed each coral as I was told this is a better method and will increase growth more.

I usually test my parameters after doing a water change but I’ve been really busy at work.

I’m following the RedSea mixed reef recipe. Is anyone following this recipe and is achieving success?

That’s it for now need to go back to work. Next post I’ll show tank shots. I bought a flipper scrubber to help keep the tank looking clean. I used to have a magfloat but I don’t know what happen either the blade became dull or something it ended up scratching up my tank!

I’m going to try my hand at this review thing lol. So when I first bought the tank I got a magfloat scrapper as that was suggested to be the best one. After months of using it I noticed it start to scratch up the tank:mad:. It may have been because I was scrubbing all the way down to where the sand was and pieces got stuck to it or the blades were dull who knows. It really got to me at first but then I just go over it and moved on. I was researching online a better replacement and I came across Flipper. At first I couldn’t find it in any of my lfs so I felt hopeless. But then one day I saw them hanging at the lfs and I grabbed one. They came up with a really cool idea of having two scrappers in one. One side is a Scrubber and the other side is a scrapper.

After using the flipper I would say it does a really good job and the blades that come with get the job done.

That’s the aggressive clown in the hospital/separation box. I feel bad for leaving her in there but if I let her out she will go straight for the Clarkii’s. I like the Clarkii’s so much because it has the hint of white on their eyes. In the blue night they look like zombie fish lol.

This is my sump I have a Bubble Magus Curve 7, Cobalt 75watt heater, and PhosBan Reactor 159for GFO. I am using MarinePure Biofilter media. I bought an extra 10lbs of sand because there were spots in my tank before that were being blown elsewhere.

I was lucky enough to buy a 30 gallon drum from my lfs to store all my rodi water.

Trying to keep everything as organzied as possible so I have old buckets that I use to hold all my tools for a water change, another for acclimation, old salt water from tank, and new fresh salt water to be added.

I was battling with low salinity after my recent water change and I didn’t know what to do at first. But then I came across this post at r2r by @Kirschy17 who suggested that to increase at the right speed. He suggested to add saltwater to your tank at the salinity you want to increase it to. Since I have the reefer170 I just added it to my ato. It’s been few days since I did this and already I’m starting to see my razzle dazzle frag open up.

three heads of the razzle dazzle opened up hoping to see more open up soon.

Seeing my corals grow and feeling that sense of accomplishment and success is what drives my addiction for this hobby. Sure you can buy colonies and just place them where ever. But buying frags imo yes it is more work but then watching them grow new heads and later on into a colony is worth it in the end.

It doesn’t help that my lfs is only a 30min drive for me. When I got there they were having a sale $10,$20,$30 Corals buy 2 get one free. Although it sounded extremely tempting I resisted the urge to buy and went home. When I looked at my tank this morning I felt like I wanted to glue my zoas, mushroom, and favia but I wanted to wait until the weekend just so I could observe how their doing a little more. But I didn’t call myself AnxiousReefer for nothing lol. I just finished gluing all of them and I hope they like their new homes.

Had a little scare today thinking my Clarkii clownfish had black ich. Thankfully it was just hyper-malanization as I assume they got stung swimming around the corals.

Thanks to @Humblefish for the useful information on the differences between the two.

I’ve been pretty good at maintaining a 10% water change ever week. The night before I measure roughly about how much salt I will need for the water changes and I get that heated and stirred with a small pump. The day of I measure it with my refractometer to see if it’s at the salinity that I want or if I need to add more salt or take add more water. Once everything is where I want it to be I learned that instead of picking up the bucket and dumping it in the tank. I used the same pump that I use to stir attach the adapter and a 3/4” tube clamp to my tank and let the pump do all the work. It has made water changes for me atleast not as dreadful.

The water is a little cloudy because I added in some sand to cover up empty spot in the tank.

You’re a lucky man, usually when people have discussions with their fiancé about the hobby they are losing the tank instead of building s new one!

You did the setup proper, good equipment, good pace, good selection.

Excited to see what happens.

You’re a lucky man, usually when people have discussions with their fiancé about the hobby they are losing the tank instead of building s new one!

You did the setup proper, good equipment, good pace, good selection.

Excited to see what happens.
Believe it or not it she’s already down for another bigger tank, and a frag lol. Thanks I try and not rush it as much as possible and just let everything I currently have grow.

I think your wife is what we call a unicorn.

When you find one, don't harm it, don't disrupt it, try carefully to capture it so that we can study it and determine how we can find more of them.

For the past two water changes I’ve done after putting in the new water. I’m always getting a low salinity of 1.021. I don’t get why is that maybe it was the Red Sea blue bucket I’ve been using. Today however I’m switching to Red Sea coral pro salt hopefully I get the salinity I want. Either my refractometer needs calibration or I’m not mixing enough salt. But when I mix and measure it always measures to 1.026 which is the salinity I want.
As suggested by a few members here I’m doing a 20% water change to get my alk, mag, and calc up. For a mixed reef my parameters are abit low and that’s probably why my corals arent puffing up.
I’m going to stick to whatever livestock I currently have in the tank by being patient and let them grow. I’m already planning on getting another tank in the future so I’ll most likely be saving up for that. I plan on getting a custom tank made by miracles aquarium. I’m not sure about What dimensions I want all I know is I want it to be a big tank lol. I’m super excited because the fiancé also allowed a frag tank. We are planning on buying our first home and dedicating a space in the basment as a fish room:D

I changed the aquascape again lol because I didn’t like the fact that when I would look through the sides of the tank my view would be blocked. Also this new aquascape gave the fish more room to swim around. The only thing that worries me about the new scape is coral placement. My plan is to have lps on bottom and sps on top. I’m not sure if my scape works for my vision.

I feel kind of guilty but at the same time I don’t lol. I told myself i wasn’t going to buy any more frags because I needed to start saving up for the new tank. It’s harder then it seems I went to my lfs today and these acans were just screaming BUY ME! Ok maybe not but I still wanted to get them;Drool .
I wanted to get all three but the one on bottom left at first looked like it had sort of a candy cane colour to it. But then my lfs showed me a picture of when it’s fully opened and it didn’t impress me much so I only ended up getting the other two. So today’s buys were 1xVitamnC Acan Lord and 1xBeachside Slushie Acan Lord.

So I wasn’t liking my scape and started looking for post about aquascaping. I came across a post by @Ardeus who made a few videos on different scapes for different type tanks. I then reached out to him and asked his opinion on how my scape looked he said that it was boxy looking. After taking a second look I agreed and started figuring out different scapes. I watched a video on YouTube about Terrance fugazzi and another guy competing on who can make the best scape with reef stax rock which is what I have. Terrance made a good point that because of the way reef stax are made. Most scapes end up looking very boxy and stacked up. At the end of the video Terrance won the competition by creating a scape that didn’t have the usual boxy stacked look. It had shape and from that video this is what I came up with. I’m quite pleased on how it turned out I want to glue it so it all stays in place but I’m afraid to even touch it. Hopefully when I start adding more coral it all works out.

Loving the tank!!! I'm sure you could sneak a small fuge in that stand somewhere or do a HOB version, everything I've read on the Dragonets says eventually at some point they will revert back only eating pods. While feeding them frozen is great you might be able to work on something like PaulB's BBS feeder to feed them a bit better over the day:)

The scape looks great and hopefully you're happy with it now:) :)

The scape looks good Anxious! It will look nice when corals begin to grow on all the different levels keep it up. Youre off to a good start for sure!
Thanks I appreciate the feedback

I’ll look into that thanks for the tip. I didn’t know that they would revert back to pods good to know thanks again
