Some put out smoke signs?
No deer yet this season but it’s early, we can bow hunt till Jan 20th here in the great state of Texas.
I’m heading out again next week for 10 days and we got to shoot a turkey first or we eating bunny nuggets for thanksgiving.
Reminds me of going out with my grandparents camping in Idaho. I mean places so far off the map I was thankful many times of my boy scout sessions. They packed light and only brought in the bare minimum and emergency first aid. That was it. I was the youngest so my brother would go get to fish with our grandpa. Me, I'd go collect berries with my grandma. Both would teach us what we could and couldn't eat. What animals to watch, what we could eat what they etc, etc. They would also show us how to track, what to look for, their poo. This is a heck of a lot for a young kid to take in, right? Then we met back at camp and ate what everyone either caught or collected. This is water, fish, berries, etc.
I grew up then got to go fish. Grandpa taught me how to fish for trout, what to look for, their hunting habits, etc. This time though my brother got to go out with my grandma and, well, they got to go hunting. She was using a .305 savage and he was using my 'pa's .308. She passed that rifle on to me - old but still shoots straight. Anyway back to camp we go. I had fish, they had deer, elk, or whatever time of the year it was back in the late 70's because I don't know the rules. I never got to switch roles because my brother ended up joining the Navy and my grandparents grew older and couldn't go out anymore but I would still visit.
In any case your post about turkey and eating reminded me of this. Their idea of camping was bring enough to be warm and first aid. The rest you gather on your own or starve. That was more or less what they taught us. First time camping with my kids my wife looked at me and said don't even think about it. We are bringing food!!!
