Anyone got a good, compact DIY diatom filter?

looking at building one for my new tank, but details seem to be hard to find. I would want one to run 24/7 not just after water changes. my idea would be to have it as a secondary filter. have a split on both of my over flows to feed it and then it go back into the sump after. this wont filter 100% of my water but should make a big difference over time.

but im trying to figure out how to build one that can run 24/7 any suggestions?

I can just buy this one http://www.diatomfilter.com/products/diatom_xl_filter.htm but I always prefer to make it if I can and it be reliable. but if its just not plausible ill buy instead.
