Anyone have a Cane Corso Mastiff?

Well after alot of talking, thought and discussion with the mrs, we decided we wanted to do more of a rescue or adopt an unwanted dog since it isn't like we are going to get into breeding or anything like that, and save a life. Most of the pure bred canes I found were improperly socialized (which was why they were shipped off to the pound/ rescue groups) and were either adopted out already, or not good with kids or other dogs which are my 2 big criteria (for obvious reasons lol)..... but, I found a cane corso, pit mix about 250 miles away that the family "just doesn't have time for" anymore. It is good with their 2 kids (one is around my sons age) and other dogs :) The plan is to go pick her up this weekend :):):)

She is a beautiful 8 month old black w/ white chest mix. The current owners were very upfront and answered all of my questions and she seems to be a good fit for us and she will get the time and attention she needs, as well as alot of good exercise/ play time as well.

Her, biggest flaw, seems to be she is a counter surfer, and a digger (random spots, not much for fence line) which I think both issues can be resolved fairly easily as she is only 8 months old. I have the ability to close a door and block off the kitchen when we are not in there with her, until she is broken of that habit, and I have heard that you can build a sand box and train them to dig in that designated area by placing their treats/ toys in there. We shall see :)

She is currently eating purina (yuck!), but after alot of research and looking around we have decided to switch her and our other 2 dogs (which are on science diet...ewww) to a product made for tractor supply co. called 4Health. It seems to rank fairly high, has alot of good ingredients, no corn products, and actual meat not by-products, and it seemed there were many good reviews for it as well.... and for $25-30 for 35lbs the price is nice too! Also, the large breed formula has a higher level of glucosimne and condroten (sp?).... bonus! If this doesn't work out for the dogs I will probably go to a raw diet similar to the one listed previously by JimC (and may even do some supplementation with that formula scaled down anyways).

I would research the tractor supply foods in depth more,
here in nj they are always having recalls on dog foods from there,the worst thing is that it takes someones pet
passing away for them to pull it off the shelves.

Yeah, I did notice they had a recall a few months ago, all diamond products did, including some of the "higher end" foods like TOTW and a few others (pretty much every brand out there has had a few recalls so as far as that goes there aren't any GREAT options). That said it doesn't seem they have had alot of recalls with this product, but I definitely plan to keep an eye on things.... but anything can get a recall including the human foods I would use for the raw diet, unfortunately. :(

Congrats on the adoption! She's cute!

Digging can be cured with a yucky little trick. Just put dog poo in the holes and fill back in the hole. When the dog goes to dig again, it gets a nasty surprise! That usually breaks the digging habit pretty quickly. Including an area where it is okay to dig is good too. Make sure that it is clearly marked (railroad ties around it or different color sand, etc).

I hadn't been back to this thread in a bit. Have a friend who's breeder has some Cane pups in Chicago. Was just checkin in to throw that at you. I see you are all set. Good stuff man. Pup looks great. I got a Bassett from a rescure a few years ago. Lookin forward to the pics...

It is the only food she will actually eat right away without being incredibly hungry. It is very good for them as well as it doesn't use any fillers. PetCo runs sales on them for the very big bags every now and then for about $30, regular price is $60.

I use the same food. I use the lamb variety for my sheltie and she loves it. It is actually lower in calories than her previous weight control food. It also keeps her full longer.

Thanks guys, sorry haven't been around much been pretty busy with the new girl. She somewhat knows the basics, but clearly has spent the vast majority of her days in a crate so the basics are very basic and she craves constant attention. She is slowly opening up and exploring her new found freedoms.

When I picked her up she was definitely on the light side (even at roughly 60lbs), as she was eating purina puppy chow sparingly she has better tastes then that clearly, we have since almost gotten her onto 4health for large breeds through TSC (at 1:1 ratio after a week) and she likes it and seems to be doing good on it. She is gaining weight nicely and increasing muscle tone already IMO. She loves running intheyard, going for walks, chewing bones.... and being by my side constantly lol. She hasn't grasped the idea of tug-o-war or fetch yet but trying to work on those as well to give her some more options for things to burn energy and play.... like I said I think she was pretty much a crate dog :(
