Anyone have the Bashsea Twisted Skimmer without the gate valve?

I found this on their website.

"Due to global supply shortages, we are temporarily manufacturing this product without the gate valve until shortages are addressed.

This does not affect performance as we have implemented a factory pre-set water level.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

I have a 6-30 model. I am in the process of setting up my system(TV appx; 180g). I have read through most of Bashsea Literature and it seems they are not planning on installing gate valves anymore. Essentially tuning will be conducted via flow rate. Finer tuning may be possible by adding a gate valve, just note the current tee height, as this is the preset water height. Dwell time is a function of the pump feed rate. Air volume can also be adjusted with the addition of a valve on the air hose intake.

Overall the Bashsea line of skimmers are unique. They offer external operation, but currently are limited in being tunable. They are also unique being an induction type skimmer.(vs needle wheel)

On a side note, I chose this skimmer because I am planning on direct feeding via my full siphon overflow. Control/autoshutdown via an actuated valve
on the air hose intake. External operation.

I hope this helps all who are considering Bashsea as there skimmer choice. I will update this thread when my skimmer is brought online with the direct feed modification I am implementing.

I had Bashsea skimmer long time ago for 240 Gal reef tank. No gate wave. Needed very high flow pump to operate, rising my electricity bills. Rather difficult to tune up and if working properly will overskim your tank. Unless you already bought it I would go for needle wheel type skimmer, much more convenient, efficient, reliable, easier to control and you can use controllable DC pump if you want.

What is the point of the “twist” assembly on this skimmer?

Unlike most skimmers on the market. The twist is the initial contact between the fine bubbles and the water mass to be filtered.

This skimmer utilizes induction to produce the foam fracture skimming.

Short bus thinking: kid sprays from the hose into a bucket. Produces fine bubbles. Any impurities may be carried on the foam to be collected.

Any pump can work, as the impeller is not a needle impeller.

The twisted part is immediately after the pressurized water injection. The idea is to increase contact time before entering into the skimmer body.

The main difference between induction skimmer design and neddle wheel skimmer;

Induction design were designed for industrial/ waste water treatment. Needle. Impeller and Venturi were designed for smaller scale.

Both designs can be used at the hobbyist scale and level. Each design has their unique quirks for maintaining and tuning.

In needle impellers with a venturi, keeping the vent free of salt creep and calcified deposits. Water basin level.

With induction skimmers maintaining consistent pressure at the intake nozzle.
