I've got some gorgs and I love them. I would like to find some more unique ones that I've seen, such as the yellow spirals and fluffed up ones. The corky fingers I'd like too, but I'm not sure if the ones I've seen at a supplier are the encrusting kind of the ones on stems.

Proximity question. I noticed several of you have leathers close together. Don't they fight with each other? I try to keep mine spaced apart, which sadly limits what I can put in my tank, but if putting them closer is okay---well---I got more room for stuff ;) LOL


Edited to add: I run carbon and purigen both.

Like everything else in this hobby it depends. Terrible answer but in my experience sometimes if they touch you will find the touching parts won’t open or maybe the entire coral won’t open. In the former they just seem to grow away from each other. Remember softies can move. Other times it doesn’t seem to matter at all. They will let you know in plenty of time to move them if needed. I have found out that if a softy spends much time touching acro, the acro will lose

The thing that has held me back from leathers is the fear of toxicity in the tank. Has anyone had any poison their fish? I have fish that I do not want to lose (especially over stupidity).

I've never crashed a tank because of leathers. I have crashed a tank because of deep sand bed, Fiji mud, and moving a rock. It was a horrifically tragic event that I never, never, NEVER want to see again (but yeah I know it's always a possibility). Within a matter of hours my entire tank was toast. I did manage to save all but 2 fish.

With leathers I just watch for any signs of disease and do one of two things. I frag what I can save, if something looks salvable, and I toss the rest. A crumbling, melting leather, is not good for a tank. I also run carbon and Purigen.

Since I’m so new to this, I may well go this route for my first tank.

As pretty as LPS and SPS tanks are, especially once you go towards the SPS dominant or SPS exclusive side of things those wacky colors come together more like a painting than an actual reef.
