They are still a solid choice and many reefers are, in fact, still running halides. If you have a specific question regarding running halides again, you should post up here...

I am BUT I have been hoarding bulbs (just ordered another pair tonight lol) and just replaced my electronic ballast because I am fairly certain once what's out there is gone, that's it. I'm not opposed to leds as I have a small reef with leds. It's just on the tank the halides are on I have no good reason to switch. The first halides I had were just two 175w SE over an 18" deep 6ft tank with run of the mill reflectors (nothing like the fancy Hamilton's etc) and those gave me full "perceived" coverage and turned brown wild caught acros halfway down the tank that I didn't even know had the potential to turn colors (this was 07' or 08') into nice growing green and purple tip pieces within 3 months time. So when I set up my current 36"lx16"dx12"w 10-11 years ago I figured 2 150w de halides would be plenty and it was. Then a year or two later I stopped keeping corals and only got back into it within the past 6 months. I changed the skimmer, return pump, circulation pumps, media reactor... but the lights stayed. I was cleaning out my garage and I still had the original boxes to some of those halide components over a decade later! I have a long way to go to get back to that level

NICE! I run LED's but I still have my halides JIC. Note, though, double-ended halides are less and less common. Back when I got my halides everyone was going double-end and so did I but now, it seems, mogul base bulbs are the preferred bulb.
