Don’t have anything else to compare it with but with a little effort and using digital filters I can get some fairly decent pictures with my older Apple device, a friend of mine has the new Apple phone, 11 pro I think it is? and for a phone it takes absolutely amazing photos.

IMO the secret to good coral photos with a smartphone is manual focus. On an Android phone this means finding a phone that has the Camera2 API, then downloading an app like Manual Camera. This allows you to set everything manually, e.g. white balance, focus, exposure, etc.

I think that is Android specific info and have no idea how it works on an iPhone.

I have an older android and am not at all happy with the pics I take. Pretty sure it's more an operator than equipment problem. :( Going to have to look into that manual camera app. Thanks for the tip @AquaBiomics.

+ 1 on the operator
I am going to have to try one of those, thanks
It comes stock on my note 9. From what I've read it's on the s8s as well looks like this
Allows you to manually focus, shutter speed, and a bunch of other things.

my Canon 6D with 100mm f2.8L takes the best pictures.

but i've been too lazy to take it out, transfer over pictures to computer, process them, then upload... etc...

so i've been using my Pixel 2XL, and just using in-phone edit to fix white balance, crop, resize, then drop to computer over bluetooth.

Never had tried a samsung but I have an old iPhone 6 and can get pretty decent pictures using a truVu Lens. Its seems to do the best when taking close up pictures. The colors are accurate but the background is pretty blue. I recently got an Olympus TG 6 water proof camera and it takes much better pictures without being washed out in as much blue.

How did I never see pro mode on my galaxy s8+? I just checked and its there, ha.

I think it takes pretty decent pictures. Here are some unedited pictures I snapped using an android galaxy s8+.
