Anyone here done an aquarium bridge on tanks with sumps? Im planning on giving it a try. I have 2 5'x2'x2' tanks. One is a pro clear and the other is a red sea. I am thinking about putting them in a L shape then the water bridge will be 1'x1' at 45⁰ to the tanks. Im going to mount pumps that will alternate flow through the bridge so no stagnation issues should arise. Any ideas?

Are you referring to what they do with some freshwater tanks? You said 1' x 1' so I'm assuming a large tunnel "overhead".

If so, all you would really need to do is pump into one, drain from the other. It would work similar to an external overflow with U tubes between the two tanks. The levels would try to normalize

I did similar in my aquaponics system but with different water levels. Pumped from the sump under the grow beds into the fish tank and overflowed from the tank into the grow bed through a 1.5" bulkhead.

@Fish Styx has his Display and Mangrove tanks plumbed together with 1 sump I believe, but he uses 2 returns and 2 drains if I'm not mistaken so another option if you don't want them physically tied together.

Thanks. I will probably be hitting you up. Sorry its been a week. I was in a car wreck that was fairly serious. Got a concussion but the wife and my 2yo son were ok. Figured i should wait until my mind was better before trying something so stupid. Lol. Its just sitting on top of the new tank. Its 12x12x4 right now. Made from 2 pieces of 24x48x.25 thick arcrylic. I hope that would be sufficient.

Glad to hear that you're all safe, wow!!

I don't know for sure, but the 0.25" thickness has me a bit worried; just sayin' 😬

I'd ask @Troylee and @UncommonSense for their help with this project 🙂

I assume you've seen the Joey King of DIY video on making tunnels like that? He's got a bunch, and a quick search reveals these, maybe these will be of some help:

Good luck!

Ok so last night i got on the computer and made my design come part of the way to life. I will look to render it to reality in my living room. I think i want the bridge bigger. So i may make some suttle changes. The plan is to make the bridge look like a cave but big enough for the lions and panther grouper to go through.

One other consideration - make sure you have some way to remove air that potentially builds up inside.
