Are rosy red minnows bad?

I have an antenatta lionfish that I've had for 2 years. He primarily eats guppies that I get from a local store. I've also trained him to eat krill, silverslides, jumbo mysis, etc.

His main diet is gut loaded guppies that I keep in a feeder tank.

I went to the store today to stock up but they didn't get any this week. I stopped by Petsmart, they had some rosy red minnows that would be a good size for the lion.

I remember reading a while ago that rosy reds and goldfish were very poor feeders for lionfish.

Why is this? Too fatty? Too oily?

Fresh seafoods known to be high in thiaminase can be supplemented with thiamin. Conversely, aquarists can avoid feeding fresh seafoods known to be high in thiaminase.

Thank you for this run down. I've been feeding "silversides" to my orange toadfish but I suspect they aren't actually. I'll have to look into alternatives.
 
Best frozen food (I've been told) to feed predators is skin on salmon. I cut into chunks and just freeze in bags, pulling out pieces as needed.

If I got load them with high quality pellets, that should make them more nutritious than just plain. Is that accurate?

Yes, that can help, as long as the pellets have a good level of vitamin B1 (thiamin) and vitamin E. Herpers do that "gut loading" trick with crickets, etc., fed to lizards and such, to try and overcome any deficiencies. The trouble with thiaminase is that it isn't an "all or nothing" thing - the thiaminase levels can differ between food items, even of the same food species. Then, there may be different dietary thiamin needs for different species of predatory fish. Since thiamin is water soluble, you cannot overdose it, so more of it is better. In the end though, feeding fewer food items that are high in thiaminase is best.
