I agree with Randy - I admire the dedication to your tank. Then again, I drank out of the garden hose as a kid.
The real trick was remembering to let the cold water run through the hose before taking a drink of the lava inside the hose that was setting in the sun all day!

Why not just 3D print a half cylinder to act as a shade?

Wow, dedication. Willing to sacrifice yourself for your tank. lol

FWIW, I do not recommend ever tasting tank water. Too much chance of pathogenic bacteria.

the rubber is probably OK, but do you know anything about it composition?
Best diet out there. You eat it comes right out!

Just keep an eye on it for uv or bacterial degradation.
"GHS Hazard Statements
H332 (39.39%): Harmful if inhaled [Warning Acute toxicity, inhalation]
H413 (60.61%): May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life [Hazardous to the aquatic environment, long-term hazard]"?

I just ordered a piece of 1mm PE-HD.
Don't wanna take the risk using the SBR rubber, just to save a few $

I think "8.1.1 GHS Classification" indicate that SBR might cause "long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life"

Good choice- and way to go doing the research!

Best of luck; share some pictures of your tank in a tank thread at some point! :star-struck:

Utter nonsense. I gave expert chemical advice. Others pointed out this polymer is a chewing gum base.

But a random web site that shows the structure as if it wasn’t a polymer and gives hazards as such is what rules the day.

But be sure to not suck the piece of rubber into your lungs since it is a listed inhalation hazard. Lol

Fully agree, very high likelihood you'll be fine. I use to formulate medical devices with synthetic rubbers. Your sheet good is likely all synthetic rubber with a pinch of colorant and maybe a touch of filler. I used to highly plastisize with mineral oil, tackifiers and fillers, but again, doubt you have much of these in that sheet good.

Mislead? The fact that I would not use it in my own tank is hardly misleading anyone! I told the chap that I would follow your advice over my own and that he would likely be "just fine"? :face-without-mouth:

I also mentioned that you are somewhat of a wizard when it comes to chemistry?

I don't want to get into a fight with you- but don't be unreasonable mate!

Nah, this discussion end for me here! We all know that you're a brilliant chemist- this community would sorely miss you if you weren't here ; no one disputes that! In any discussion along these lines, you are more than likely correct!

Have a good evening Randy!

Sorry, perhaps I misunderstood your previous post. I assumed you were supporting his decision to avoid the SBR, and that’s the getting research you were boosting.

Again, sorry if that is not what you meant.
