Are there any peaceful tangs?

They all seem to squabble a bit. Add them last. Mine currently have formed a gang. Some in-fighting but thats how they roll. Anything I add now has to go through an initiation. Blood in blood out.

Believe it or not my purple tang is somewhat a model citizen….although he did chase my newest tang (tomini) around for a few hours, they get along great now. But if I add anything like a wrasse or something completely different he completely ignores them!

Tolmini/bristletooth/kole usually aren’t bad.

pretty good rule of thumb - bigger the fish more tendency towards aggressiveness in its genes

Is there any such thing as a small, peaceful tang? I love the look of them, but don't want something that would outgrow the tank or pick on my current or future livestock (lawnmower blenny, silver molly, and 6-line wrasse).

Tangs are the warlords of the reef.

Kole tangs are peaceful as long as you put them in last . Naso tangs are great but they get big fast

I have a Naso and spotted bristetooth tang. They have been absolutely amazing. Very peaceful and just mind their own business. Eat like pigs and go back to swimming along happily. (Atleast so far!)

I find that most are generally quite peaceful - If housed in a suitable sized tank with suitbale tank mates.

The issue with the majority seeming more aggressive is that the majority of us house them in tanks that are too small for them, with species that arent too suitable to mix creating a territory divide that doesnt usually exist.

Saying that one of the Ctenochaetus genus are generally MORE peaceful than an Acunthurus species regardless.

If i was answering based off of my own experience then ive had a few Kole tanks over the years that have gone about their day without taking any notice of others and id personally say were a very peaceful tang to have.

I have been keeping Hippo tangs almost from when Nixon was President and never had any problems with them. They are long lived and don't seem to bother anything nor do they outgrow the tank. At least mine never did and a couple lived for 10 years.

This one I have now is only a couple of years old and I am fairly certain he will stay this size in my 125 gallon tank. He's about 4 1/2". He also never had nori or seaweed.

The tank is 125 gallons and I probably have 9 or 10 bottles in there, most I collected SCUBA diving.

Heh, they just get far too large for a 75g tank :)

My yellow tang buddies up with other fish. First it was a flame angel. They litterally swam around brushing up against each other. Unfortunately the flame angel abandoned ship while I was on vacation. Now my Banggai Cardinal and Yellow tang behave the same way swimming around together like two peas in a pod.

Having tangs is like inviting that one Uncle to your BBQ, he may or may not behave himself.
I have a purple and yellow and I have caught the purple harassing the yellow as he sees food hit the tank, the yellow will cower and the purple gets the larger pieces of shrimp.
The yellow falls for this tactic all the time.
But they are peaceful for the most part well that is until the purple tangs gets drunk then all bets are off.

In my experience tangs in the Naso genus are pretty docile, particularly the Vlamingi. They are aggressive eaters but I've never had one that was aggressive to tankmates. Same is true for other Naso spp.

Vlamingi and naso for me but you asked about smaller. My Blue hippo is peaceful to the point of the being a bit shy. My convict tang has never shown aggression to any other fish even small gobies, chromis etc. I have read where people have trouble keeping them tho. My first lasted about 4 years. My current one is at the 1 year mark.

I agree with Paul B concerning Hippos being peaceful. I've had 3 or 4 over the years and I've never had one that was aggressive at all. I also agree with his mention that they do seem to slow their growth if they're in smaller tanks. A Hippo tang is a 'must have' fish for me!
