Are there any peaceful tangs?

Is there any such thing as a small, peaceful tang? I love the look of them, but don't want something that would outgrow the tank or pick on my current or future livestock (lawnmower blenny, silver molly, and 6-line wrasse).

Its a gamble with tangs. You don’t know what your gonna get. I have a scopas and I’ll say hes polite but not nice. The bristletooth are decent. Have you thought about a rabbitfish? They are very timid.

Depends on the size of the system and when they are introduced. Larger is better and last fish in helps. I liked my Tomini and white tail bristletooths. Not big good personality unique coloration and work as a utility fish

Tangs of the Ctenochaetus genus are supposed to be more peaceful and smaller than the others, but that depends on the character of each fish. If I remember correctly, I have not known cases of aggressive blue tangs, you can buy them from small sizes.

Tomini and Kole Tangs are fine in my experience.

I would say no to any tangs being peaceful unless In a big tank. I have 3 that are peaceful in my 210 but they are not peaceful to newcomers.

tomini tangs are pretty peaceful. and stay smaller.

My yellow eye kole tang is nice 99% of the time. I do have a small bioload though, so the tank isn’t crowded.

That's a good point, most tank adapted tangs may not be too friendly to new additions, but after a few days that should go away, in theory.

I have had my blue eye kole for 2 years now, I think only 3 fish in my tank went in before him (A clown, foxface, and a CBB, the fox was my first fish to hit the water).
The fish that I was most worried about was a Flashing Tilefish yet everyone including the tang and fox avoided him.

And this is one of the other fish in with him, a Genicanthus melanospilos. This guy went in after the tang was established and still showed no issues of aggression.

Naso/blonde naso tangs are large peaceful tangs. Sorry I don't know of any peaceful small tangs.

Smaller tangs are in short supply, but some options would be the Tomini Tang, Kole Tang and Squaretail Bristle Tooth.

I have a Tomini Tang and it has been great. Only time it get's aggressive is with my Cherub Angel, but the Cherub is the one instigating.

A fair warning, since you mentioned a lawnmower blenny. Ctenochaetus (kole, tomini, etc) genus tangs and lawnmower type blennies hate each other.

Not sure about peaceful tangs, but my purple tang is a complete jerk. It's also my favorite fish. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I occasionally attach a 5 inch mirror to the side of the tank to let him let his aggression out. It usually does the trick until he gets the itch again.

Is everyone here supposed to use the force to guess your display size and other general information besides existing fish? You mention outgrow - are we talking a 62 gallon tank or 1062 :) Big difference. And peaceful is relative especially since you have a 6 line.

Edit: I had to do a quick search / build thread and see that you have a 75 gallon? Is that correct? I would almost go with a Biota captive bred/raised yellow tang. You get one that is captive bred/raised, you know the age roughly, and can watch it grow. On the other hand something like a Tomini Tang may be more reasonable that typically stays under 6" I believe.

I don't know the price range so do not want to spend other hobbyist money :) But Yellow Eye Kole (although can get somewhat large) or a Tomini would be nice. I would also consider Biota's yellow but they are a bit more expensive at 150'ish.

I have a square tail bristletooth tang that is relatively peaceful. He will occasionally chase a wrasse, but it’s nothing too aggressive and he doesn’t hurt anyone. He’s a good algae eater too and helps keep my rocks clean!

Nasos, and valmingis are the chillest tangs I've seen. Everything else is 80/20 gonna be an butt, usually just depends who's bigger.

Sailfin is bossy but never does harm. Great personality. Hardy fish.

Had a very personable yet fast growing vlamingi tang that was the sheriff of the tank. Never aggressive always calm and kept a yellow royal and a purple tang all in control. I had to take him out because he grew too fast in a 180 and rehomed him to the local fish store.
When that happened the purple became a jerk and still is.

However in a 90 I have a flame fin and a blue eyed bristletooth and they are is docile and hard working as can be.
