Hey Reefers! I’ve been watching reefing vids and reading posts lately, and I’ve come across an idea that I wasn’t too familiar with before. That Reefers actually compete with each other. Whether it’s for recognition or just bragging rights, I was curious if this applies to your reefing situation too? Perhaps a little friendly competition keeps reefing fresh and interesting? What do you think?

This has a long way to go to get back into it’s former self, but it’s starting to.

I am competitive in that if someone has a better looking set up that I do, I try to pass them up, but it's not about bragging rights. It's a 'How do they do that and can I match or exceed with my own ecosystem?'. It's a drive to create and maintain a thing of beauty and efficiency. Yeah, I USED to be the kind of Dude that would be somewhat prideful. But as I've aged, I feel less and less like trying to outdo others for that reason alone. It's more just to better myself.

Now, realizing that I am the smartest AND the best looking person IN THE WORLD, y'all may now support that last statement by actively (and continuously) extolling my virtues!

I am not competitive against other reefers but I am 100% in competition with myself. My systems are never complete and I am always looking for ways to make them better.

The only “competition” I have with another reefer is when I see a gorgeous system or Reef of the Month and think, if that’s the level I have to get to to win, I have to be better than that.

I thought that competing for rotm would help get me off the plateau, but honestly I think it would ruin reefing for me. I am not a competitive person at all, and I really don’t care what other’s think of my tanks. At the end of the day, recognition and pride don’t add anything to my life, so I’m just gonna keep doing my thing. But I hope you and others win if that’s what you’d like. I agree that self motivation is helpful, and we just have to challenge ourselves to keep things fresh sometimes.

Oh I’m not trying to win tank of the month. I just see what can be done and know I can do better at my own systems

Besides being gorgeous, almost every TOTM has someone who can take good pictures and/or videos. I think there are a lot of tanks out there that rival or beat TOTM winners but the user can’t, won’t, or doesn’t take amazing pics so they’ll never be recognized in that way

In competing with myself, I guess I’m doing okay since April. I always encourage others to zoom in and see the flaws. That’s what gives a tank it’s personality, imo. Sorta like people. 🙂

I’m too new to be competitive and honestly I’m doing this for me for a specific reason (as I’ll explain when I do a tank thread in the next few weeks). But I do enjoy looking at all the amazing reefers and their creations!

Honestly, I just try to stay humble in this hobby. It isn't a race for me to have the best tank out there. I just have fun and go along with whatever is thrown at me!

We are two of the least confrontational people you will ever meet. We do everything in our power to avoid confrontation. So no, we are not competitive with each other, haha
