Hey all,

New aquarist here (Austin) running a 50 gallon Aquadream saltwater aquarium with my fiancee. The tank cycled after about 4 weeks and we are ready for the first two clownfish here shortly. They’ll join the 10 red legged hermits we have, now that they’ve enjoyed running the tank for a couple weeks post-cycle :)

Figured I’ll be reaching out for help here soon as we hit the uglies and the unpredictability a small ecosystem offers in the early stages, so I thought I’d introduce myself. I’ve probably spent about 60+ hours reading through posts on this page so far lol.

My former girlfriend and now fiancee suffered from an acute stroke 18 months ago due to an extremely rare neurological disease that went undetected until the event. We’re both in our late 20s and to say it has been an insane journey would be an understatement. Anyways her mother bought this tank for us as she was recovering and as an engagement gift. We’ve always wanted a saltwater aquarium but never thought we would actually do it. My fiancee has now fully recovered, back to work kicking butt, and we can finally enjoy this together.

I just thought it was an incredibly cool gift as we’re starting a new chapter in life and we simultaneously build an ecosystem together. At first the hobby was completely overwhelming and it has taken hours on hours to really understand it all. With that being said, it has been extremely rewarding taking this day by day, researching essentially everything, and the small progress you get to enjoy occasionally.

Couldn’t be happier to be a new part of this community and looking forward to the challenges ahead (except maybe Dinos)!

Any tips as to flow or improvements are much appreciated! Along with anything else you can think of, that I should know, or concerns on our current setup. I know the lid isn’t on correctly- that’s my next goal. I may get a custom one as I’ve read Kraken reef is superb a few times on this page. Also next up on the list is a protein skimmer.

Thanks again!

WELCOME!!!
Well done! So far, so good, and that is a very special gift! A gyre or MP10 or two is always good for flow. Pace yourself and acquire things as NEEDED.
We are here as you need us.

Hey Austin,

Welcome. It'sIa great hobby.

I'm also in the Denver area. IM me if you want some free frags. I have GSP, shrooms I can give you.

Also be sure to check out Reef Stock, it's a great aquarium show. 2/28 & 3/1 next year.
